How long can the diesel engines last?

    Hi guys

I am considering the Discovery range of LR vehicles in second hand version only. What would constitute in your opinions too high mileage for a second hand vehicle relative to age?

I am just scared of anything over say 150,000 km on the clock. Perhaps my fear is unwarranted?

    Thanks

Some mechanics will tell you - with a good service history a diesel with 400,000km will twice as long... Obviously no one is willing to back that up.
Depends on the service history and overall treatment of the car.
My triton had 270,000 when I bought it (2003 model), full service history (fleet car) with long country kms and the driver actually looked after the car. Seat wasn't worn out on the sides, steering wheel was still good... Depends how people look after the vehicle but I think you could buy a vehicle with 60,000 on the clock and have more trouble than a 200,000 diesel if it's been mistreated.

Our D3 has 190,000 - we got it 4 months ago.. It's been around Australia once, Tasmania etc - regular service history and overall good condition - wasn't scared of the kms - I expect it last me till 300-350 before I think of changing.
My dads D1 has 360,000 on the clock and still going.

Not a Discovery, but my 110 is approaching 600,000 with no real mileage related problems. I am currently looking for a D1 diesel, and would be quite happy to find one with 300,000kms, although as pointed out, condition, service history, and how it has been treated are probably more important than actual kilometres.

Thanks fellas, I kind of thought the owner and service history have as much to do with it. I guess with lots of KMs also comes lots of other things to change in the car, not even thinking of possible engine troubles.

I would be pretty confident if someone shows full service history and I would also get a mechanic to check it.

big price difference between a 1 and 2 imo. you can pick up a tidy d1 very cheap... yes mine is a 1996 v8 but it was 1 owner, log books, 185k, all new bushes, 2inch lift, front and rear towbar, electric brakes, spotties, dual batteries, 80% pirelli tyres, mint interior and relined roof lining etc etc. cost me $4500 and in the 12 months ive owned it(done a fair bit of 4x4ing), i had to replace the original alternator... thats it!
