Uni joints? Diff lash?
Hey guys my 93 V8 disco lost reverse gear about 2 weeks ago so i fitted a recon auto box. went to pick the kids up from swimming and noticed a loud clunking sound when i put it into reverse or when i put it drive it also clunks when i slow down below 50kph. It changes up and down smoothly and kicks down under hard throttle smoothly. So i dont think the box is the drama. My gut feeling is the ball joint on top of the diff just thought i would throw it open to more suggestions or ideas before i crawl under the disco in the morning. thanks guys

Not sure on the correct way, but if you have a clunk in your diff, jacking up one wheel and rocking the wheel will make it make a noise if its that. Do a back wheel first, then a front. You will be able to feel the normal play in the diff and the transfer case, but listen for some bad clunking. Any of the diff pinion seal leaking? That may show some play in the pinion bearings. Long shot, but I'm just thinking of stuff out loud...![]()

Not sure - I would have thought it would clunk more going over bumps if that was stuffed rather than on and off the throttle, but worth a look.

Is the Auto kickdown cable adjusted correctly, it controls pressure and gear changes, Regards Frank.
