My manual states that the inertia switch is only operational with the starter switch in position II, (I guess they are assuming that a high speed accident will not occur without the key in the ignition!) and stops the doors centrally locking or if the doors are locked will unlock them in the event of a sudden impact. Once activated the central locking is inhibited and hazards flash for a minimum of 30 secs or until the system is reset by turning the starter switch on and off. (Why is it so hard to say 'key' in owners manuals!)

Mine stayed activated for an hour until I did the reset sequence. Also removing the wiring to the unit stops it for some time but it activates again once reconnected. Also mine is a Tdi, the engine didn't shut off. It is also a '97 with the switch under the glovebox, though the later V8s may have it in the engine bay!

Had the same problem with my 96 tdi when I first got it. Engine kept running, just the hazards went off (and I guess the doors unlocked) - it would re-set by turning off and re-starting.
Problem turned out to be one of the mounting lugs on the alarm ECU that lives on the side of the pasenger's footwell had broken - all fixed with some double sided mounting tape and a big washer over the cracked lug - 2 years and lots of off-road and no more problems.

It won't reset if you turn the engine on. You must turn the key to position II then back off again WITHOUT starting the motor. If II doesn't work try position I, as I had some trouble with mine, I think I was using the wrong position, but I can't remember exactly what it was! It's not like I can go out and try it again! I would also recommend any other standard practices when starting a car such as putting it in Park if an Auto. Do not try and understand the logic of your individual Disco's wiring. Lucas electrics systems are like women, they are all different and you need to treat them just right or they give you grief!
