    V8 vs 300tdi

Leaving fuel consumption out of the equation, which to go for in regard to running costs & reliability (fuel consumption I know about)
    TIA

    tdi.

not having to change the camshaft and followers every 100-150KM or so to maintain performance is a cool thing..

Of set of course by having to check the tappets every second service or so.

and yes, it does come down to getting a good one... but then the same applies to the v8.

Interesting, most of the higher mileage V8s haven't had badly worn cams, they've had cracked blocks instead. Now that's a show stopper.

Get a top hat linered V8 and run high zinc Penrite engine oil and you'll have a relatively reliable V8. Then you just have to replace all the gaskets every 150 000km instead

Having been through the V8 rebuild process, go the TDI. I have a great engine which cost $4500 to build. It drives beautifully and running costs on LPG are about the same as the TDI, but the limited range is annoying.

most of the ones I get to see (and admittedly they're almost always second hand) have badly worn cams and lifters... and or leaking head gaskets at the back, and/or loose timing chains, and/or blown advance units.

mind you, they do keep right on limping along...

Disregarding fuel economy? V8 all the way.

NO timing belt, P gasket, undersized cooling system, vibration and drone at 100km/h, smoke on startup, etc etc.

The auto trans in the V8 are NOT prone to many failures, and as long as decent oil change intervals and less idling in traffic etc then valves and therefore cam and lifters etc will last quite well. Have seen worn out cams and sticking exhaust valves as low as 90,000km, but others have cracked the 250K mark without a spanner on them.

    bit like aliens V predators

V8 - more power, more torque and faster throttle response. If you play in sand or mud it is the only way to go, and by play I mean fanging like a lunatic because you can - not just getting from A to B and the howl of the V8 at 5k rpm is something to behold

I know you said discounting fuel, but I have gotten as low as 1lt per km playing hard BUT didn't get stuck

My d1 3.9 had done 350K km. Cam shaft lobes had almost disappeared - still able to hold 110 on freeway. Lost a lot of oil due to blowby pressure. I replaced it with a 55K km 3.9 from HK for $1200. Whats a tdi going to set you back?
