I have run Cooper 245/70's for a number of years on stock standard D1 vehicle. Never had any problems, off road or on. No rubbing.
I am now considering with going for General Grabber 255/70 size. Two independent tyre dealers advise that they will fit ok but I have read that there is some risk with rubbing at the rear inner guard.
Maybe I can have them first fit one on a rear wheel and then put a large trolley jack under the rear wheel to see if I can get the tyre to rub ?
lots of contradictions here. maybe disocs are very different to each other. the 265/75 tyres are almost identical in dia to the 235/85 so i would have thought they would make noticeable differences to take off.Quote:

i was always wanting to go up to 235/85 but when you do the math they seem a LOT bigger than you think. my disco is already quite lazy. not sure if that size is the go. they look good though and give good diff clearances.
i also noticed the 235/85 is much more expensive than other sizes. possibly coz not as popular.
do the 245/70 fit on the factory rims? do you need offsets etc.? dont want to fork out more on steels.
I wouldn't put 235/85 back on my 300tdi D1, they were fine on the flat but made it a dog on hills, just kind of pushed it over the edge. 245/70 16's are what I would run on standard rims (which I had before the 235's). I convinced myself they were OK when I got them, but now with comparison know otherwise.
I now have 15x7's with 31x10.5R (a set of AT and MT, common spare of MT so 9 wheels total), which are basically the same radus as 245/75 16 and I'm happy with that. The BFG 15's cost about $200 ea so are better value for me - I do a lot of km's with my car for work, and I always have a nice set of MT's for trips. The math: 5, 235/85 16 BFG AT's @ $365 ea = $1825 (what I paid for my last set). 9, 31x10.5R/15 BFG AT/MT combo @ $200ish = $1800ish. (MT's are a bit more in any size). So about the same but I have choice, longevity, close accuracy of speedo and ability to pull up hills OK. This of course plus wheels, but they are a one time spend, and I sold my 16 alloys for about the same price which helped.
This will all be different depending on your choice of tyre, but just my $0.10. Simon
I found the 245/75/16 MTRs rubbed on full lock and extreme corrugations with the Disco 300Tdi. I thibnk 245/70/16 would be better.
my main reason for doing this is to have some bigger feet and lift clearances to diff housing. would the 245/70 make much difference? i know with the 235/85 you basically only lift the diffs about 15-20mm. which is why i wanted that option but now im starting to think whether its worth it.
if i upped the fuel pump and gave it a bit more guts would the 235/85 still make it a slug? did you have your fuel pump tweaked when you had the bigger wheels on?
also, do you need an offset with steel rims? i've heard about 5 different versions.

i dont find mine to be any worse on 265/75 than it was on 245/70 and mine is stock.

I have 235/85 and they are fine with the V8 so no comparasion to the 300tdi but my advise is to do a good ring around before buying.
last set of BFG at ended up paying 280 each most expensive quote was 365
A camel cut and 2 inch lift is needed for 235/85
I have had 245/70's on my bog stock '98 Tdi since I bought it 4 years ago and have never had them touch body anywhere when off road, on road the performance is what I would expect from a small capacity old tech diesel in a heavy vehicle, not startling but adequate, it goes everywhere it needs to go and the speedo when checked against the GPS reads 5kph fast, 100 indicated, actual speed 95. Gaz;)
I think the 245/70/16 is the perfect tyre size on a D1 for daily driving. It fits well and looks good. No mods required for this size. The 245/75/16 is a good compromise size for light off road duties but a camel cut is necessary and for the 300tdi a bit of extra fuelling. The 235/85/16 requires the camel cut and extra fuelling, and if running a soft suspension possibly longer bump stops or a body lift. I ran this size on a 92tdi with 2 inch body lift and would get some tyre contact in the wheel arches on full compression.
