Hi guys, wanting to use a 2nd disco compressor for an air-on-board system. Has anybody done this, and if so how?
Also are there any compressors out there that doesnt require lubrication, or perhaps have a sump, rather than lubrication from the coolant?

But to answer you other question - I have been using D1 A/C compressors as air compressor on my defender for about 8 years. Mostly because they bolt straight on but also they are stupid cheap!
Anyways, supply the air TO the compressor by teeing off the PCV at the rocker cover. This was you will be supplying the pump with filtered air with a light oil mist. The compressor will last a long long time (I think my first one gave me 6 years of abuse) and when it dies just chuck another one in its place.

No AC in defender - thats what the vents and windows are for!
I wouldnt pay more than $50 for a good running compressor? Keep trawling through the wrecking notices. Plenty of 300tdi discos going to the scrappers these days.
With regards to my setup:
-I run a tee from the PCV before the PROVENT into the suction line of the compressor.
-Then run the standard compressor outlet line to a receiver/dryer pilfered from a 300tdi disco A/C system.
-I run a BOSS 110/150psi pressure switch inline between the compressor and the receiver/dryer this switches the clutch on and off.
-An adjustable air tank pressure relief valve will thread into the top port of the receiver dryer - I have this set just above pressure switch cutout ~ 155psi.
-Then a 1/2" hose barb on the outlet of the receiver dryer with 1/2" compressor hose runs to a 22L air tank under the drivers seat. At the junction with the tank I am currently running an inline ball valve. I did have a one way valve at this location but it seems with the advent of ebay and chine you cant buy a 1/2" one way valve that doesnt crap itself within 6 months for love or money.
-From the tank I have two lines one to the rear with a quick connect for airing tyres - quickly, the second runs through a pressure regulator dropping the pressure to ~5psi which I use to pressurize a water tank instead of using a 12V pump.
With regard to running two compressors on a 300 tdi there are a few running around I think someone one AULRO was sorting a bracket "the grubb" maybe ??? anyways, the only ones I have seen that I liked run the two compressors side by side but be aware that you may lose output as belt tension will be diminished. I imagine flicking the A/C off while running air wil be enough to limit belt loading and possible slippage but I wouldnt know

FWIW all a/c compressors have a sump full of oil, the refrigerant doesn't lubricate the internals.
What happens though is that over time a small mist of oil is drawn from the sump and through the suction valves and so the oil level lowers.
As an a/c system is a closed loop it eventually returns to the sump.
In refrigerant recovery units such as the big Javac RE1 they use a small oil separator in the liquid line and return the oil to the compressor.
I think Endless Air actually use grease as the lube.
I'm investigating just using a heavier oil than Sanden SP20 oil for the old SD7H15 comp on the Deefer for an on-board air setup as I've ripped out the crappy standard system and just rely on the Deefers excellent vents, but Steve's solution sounds excellent.
