Bad Fuel leak at tank (V8 3.9)
Mucking around at home yesterday, I was about to hook the boat up when I noticed yet another strong petrol smell... This has been happening on and off for a while now but I have been unable to trace the source. This time it stood out like dogs balls... There right in front of me, petrol leaking off the bottom of the left hand rear of the tank. It looks as though the leak is coming from the upper levels of the tank and leaking down. I turned everything off and went inside to grab my torch to inspect further but sadly the flow of fuel had stopped and the evidence evaporated. At the time of the leak, the tank is 3/4 full. Has anyone had a similar problem??? If so, where did you find the leak? there is not a lot of room under there to poke around. I've tried stuffing my iphone up there to take photos but cannot see any obvious cracks or holes or filler/breather issues.

Looking for the leak..
Take the inspection cover off the rear floor to have a look at the locking ring on the top of the tank..
That will give you a good start.

As the leak stopped and disappeared when you turned "everything off", I would suggest that the leak is from a pipe or fitting on top of the tank that only leaks when "everything" is turned on, good luck, Regards Frank.

There are a number of breathers 4 I think on top of the tank. Mine had a split in the tank where one of the breathers fitted in. Only leaked when full though.

Then,
Be checking the fuel filter. AFAIR, the filter has union nuts to the fuel piping, with flexible lines on them. Check they are tight, then start the car, and look for leaks at the flex lines.
HTH too

Problem solved!
After removing the tank I found that a small stone has somehow been trapped between the tank and the tank strap. This has worn a hole trough the tank! Thanks for all your ideas. I now have the perfect excuse to fit that long range 136L tank I've been looking at for ages.
