What model vehicle & year.
Don't spray WD40 or any other silicone spray on it as they dissolve rubber over time. Use lanolin as it is said not to affect rubber.
I had a similar problem a while back and spraying lanolin stopped it temporarily, but it came back and I had to get a pulley replaced as it was wearing unevenly on the belt. Is your belt showing signs of uneven wear?

Thanks Mick for that, I have order a new belt so in a couple of days when I turns up I'll change it and have close look ( it's the missus daily driver). I did replace the belt before discovering the alternator bearings were stuffed. So it's had a bit of a hard time. which pulley was worn?? I was going to have a close look to see if anything was out of alignment also.

Seriously, the best thing to stop squeeking is talcum powder. Won't fix it but will stop it for some time and can help diagnose where its coming from.
You might check if your pullies are aligned. I have squeaky belt as well. Water pump is out of alignment since somebody installed about 17, yes 17 (or so) :D gaskets underneath the pump so it pushed it more forward and I can see the the belt is rubbing against back end of the pulley creating squealing noise.
I bought the car few months ago, so I'm still discovering all these wonderfull cases of workmanship on it. Thet's why it's called "Discovery" I guess :D
Yeah, my pulley was out of alignment and had to be replaced.
