Mine was just blowing gouts of coolant out of the coolant header tank, as a matter of fact it blew the screw top lid off the tank, surprised the old original (black) tank could take the pressure without splitting, and no hoses let go either.
Engine started and ran ok, bit rough on start, no evidence of coolant in oil or vice versa, no steam or vapour from the exhaust, simply could not keep coolant in top of the engine.
Head removal revealed fairly substantial deterioration of the (composite) head gasket between cylinders 2 and 3, compression/gasses were passing from both cylinders into the cooling jacket.
Planning to re-fit the head with a Victor Reins MLM head gasket.

What is the fundamental difference between old and new style?

Why would I use google myself when I can ask you for pre-filtered results?

The almost 400 quid options I had found earlier were kits with all gaskets. But freight and tax structures mean it'll be cheaper to get those seperately.

Improved coolant passages, the cheapest kit i could find for a complete head was 509 GBP inc DHL shipping @ 129 GBP - i had to get it under 1KAUD.

My old head had more cracks than yours and and a 7 thou. warp between 2&3, I used a Laminated metal gasket and it ran ok for another few years, Regards Frank.
