The Rover V8's like a bit more advance than factory and you can wind a fair bit in. Go to about 10 BTDC and see how it runs. Some go even further than that. The 3.5 in my 101 had 16 degrees wound into it when I got it - only found out when I had bad pre ignition issues in hot weather, so it's dialled back to around 11 now. The power is down a bit, but I don't get any issues.

What Gav said but you can still stay with 91 Ron as long as your engine is the standard low compression engine.

the disco i have is a 97 model and you think it will run fine without pinging on 91ron with a 10 degree increase

use caution on too much advanced timing, as this will case an increase in burn temp, and not forgetting that your engine oil also cools the bang, therefore changing the viscosity values, making for more changes.
worth noting that in most new cars the ignition timing is retarded at start up to help exhaust catalyst temp increases, and to provide a more stable idle (alt load ups)
not saying timing advance is not a good thing, best to be aware of the situation,
lots of info on the net

MY 3.5 which will have the same compression ratio runs on 91 no issues and it has 10 degrees BTDC. Also being in a 101 the engine runs at much higher revs for an equivalent speed than your disco.

But if it did ping take it back a degree or two or go to 95 Ron.

I ran my 3.9 on 10 degrees advance and my 4.6 now as well, (both in the same D1) not a problem at all and much better power runs cooler and better fuel economy

My 93 is the high compression and I've been running it on 91. I was going to time it, but found at 12.5:1 a/f at full load I was getting some knock. I richened it up a little too 12:1 and all seems good.
So right now it's as advanced as I can safely run. I'll try to get degrees out of it at some stage to compare, but I won't be changing it.
