Not dumb, 1/4 to empty goes quicker than 1/2 to 1/4 - generally i find it accurate.

I have owned my 95 D1 300TDI for just over a year now.
Original vehicle cost $2800 - in fairly good condition.
Since then I have spent about $3k - new cooling system (radiator, viscous fan, hoses thermostat etc.), full length roof cage and cargo drawers, replaced sunny rims & mud tyres with alloys and new ATR tyres (picked up 8 alloys for $400 - so I have enough to build matching trailer).
Also added UHF and new roof liner.
For approx $6k i think it would be hard to find a more capable and economical proper 4wd. On a recent mainland trip with the D1 fully loaded we averaged about 750 - 800km per 89l tank of fuel. happy days :-)

I was watching an old TopGear review on youtube of the "New Discovery" and the presenter was extracting the urine about Landrover owners. Particularly the fact that in the UK the diesel is preferred because it saves two penneth per gallon on fuel despite the noise and stink they inflict on the general population.

If you only have $6k to spend then its a D1 for you. If you're worried about fuel economy then go for the 300Tdi, as the petrol V8 ha a reputation for being thirsty.

Mate the V8's are not as bad as people make out,it's how you drive it as a Ls1 owner you would know that.I also have a 2007 BF GT-P that is good when driven gently but horrible when i belt it along herveys range road.

Mate if you want something that belongs on the farm than a Tdi is for you, otherwise a V8 is a good buy and cheaper to buy.I have owned a 200 Tdi and 300Tdi and would never ever buy one again, yes they are good on juice but anything that slow and gutless will use bugger all fuel.

Unless you plan on some very remote travelling there is no reason to put up with a ****box Tdi.
