Starter motor
Starter motor has packed it in so took it to the local mechanic. Vehicle is a '97 300tdi Disco. Seems new ones are very hard to get but $1100.00 seems way over the top!
Getting the old one repaired for now !
Any suggestions about future options? Something from the UK?
Seem to be replacing starter motor every 18 months or so. Always picked up a second hand one from local La La Land. Why don't they like me?
Thanks in advance guys

What actually is wrong with the starter? Is it just the brushes or something else? I still have original starter in my 98 tdi disco, only thing done was new brushes at about 290-310k.

$1100 from Land Rover? - plenty of other new options for way less. Got a new one locally (Melbourne) a couple years back for $300 ish and is fine. They are probably packing up often because all the second hand ones are already old.

WHAAAAAAA!!!!!!
WHAAAAAA!.....$1100, just for a starter motor, I just bought a whole '97 Tdi 300, with a functioning starter motor for $750 recently, there is something wrong here.
Have you tried All 4XFour spares, I thought I'd seen new starters advertised recently for less than $1100, a lot less.
Are you sure it is the starter motor itself, one of my Tdi's has a relay fitted to the starter circuit to combat a voltage loss issue in the starter solenoid circuit through the ignition switch, it happens a lot to old vehicles.
A friend of ours just paid a mechanic, who should know better, $420 to replace the starter motor in a Diahatsu Feroza, it still failed to start a lot after the replacement starter was fitted, long story short, I fitted a relay to the solenoid circuit, no more problems, and I'm sure that was the only problem originally, but a lot of these guys don't want to take the time to look. My starter has been playing up for some time too. It has progressively gotten worse. Initially when i turned the key i would get a click sound coming from the starter, four or five goes while playing with the gear stick and she starts. Now it takes many goes and when it turns it sometimes turns slow. If i put the reds on and get a big screw driver and power it up (use it to make electrical contact) she starts up with full power each and everytime. Is it my starter or something else? I did get a quote from Brian from Land Vehicle Spares today for a starter $330

I assume the fact that after giving the starter motor a whack with a steel bar it started, means that there was something wrong with the starter motor!?
The failure to start has been an on going problem. Cleaned up a couple of earths and that had things running fine for a couple of months. Then the battery seemed to be having trouble cranking the engine, and then it just refused to start without help! All makes me think it must be something electrical and after reading anything I could find on the topic I wondered if it might have something to do with the alternator? I have no idea and just keep searching for someone who really knows!
Any way ... Had the starter motor repaired, bushes and something else and things seem to be good for the time being. Think I might try to find me a more reasonably priced new one and have it ready for the next time!
