Discovery Vibration - help needed please

    G'day all!!
I hope someone can help. I have a vibration when accelerating and especially at 2000rpm. When cold it is especially strong, but always present even when warm. It will do this When stationery, but not so strong . The vibration makes the dashboard vibrate and rattle.

It is a landrover Discovery Series 1 300 TDI 1998. I bought it about 1 month ago at which time I noticed a very slight vibration. I had the engine mounts, gearbox mounts and rubber flange at the back UJ replaced at a local (non Landie) repair centre, but still no difference.

I have checked all the belts and cooling fan for damage/wear. I have bled the fuel system. Nothing appears to be wrong in those areas.

Can anybody give me some advice on what I should check next. Thank you and have a good day - Gerry

if you scroll down to the bottom of this page you will see a search box.

enter your search in there in plain words and it should bring up some threads for you to refer to.

    Use the highlighted one.
    Has the performance been affected?

    Gerry,

I don't know if this will be your problem, but my busted uni (front shaft closest to the transfer box) a couple months back manifested itself in the beginning as a sharp vibration, especially under load.

Apparently out of the uni's that's the one most likely to give up. Might be worth a look. If you can see some shiny metal, then its probably stuffed.

    Just my two cents.

    Chris

Jack the wheels up, knock the T/C into neutral (chock the opposite end to that jacked up), grab a torch and a good pry bar and try to move the uni-joints around, look for rust staining or shiny bits. Really give them a work over, if they are ok give them a good grease.
Not the uni's, check the crank dampner, use your torch to watch the pulley from the side, see if it's wobbling or moving back and forward While engine running.
You don't say whether Manual or Auto, could be the clutch plate or pressure plate has thrown a bit off, check through the bottom inspection plate for any bits missing while you get someone to crank the engine over (with solenoid wire disconnected) with a 27mm socket, ext. and breaker bar on the front crank bolt. Last check your wheels aren't bent (egg shaped) or tyres have any bulges where they shouldn't, good luck, Regards Frank.

If the vibration occurs when stationary then unlikely UJ. Any noises along with the vibration?

    Auto or manual?

As v8lan asks, any performance issues ie won't accelerate readily or low top speed?

Is the noise cyclic or throbbing when stationary? Any noise as you turn engine off? Oil pressure low light stays on for any length after start up?

Harmonic balancer failing or loose? Inspect with belt off and engine not running - may find a wobble or movement by hand. Try running engine for a minute without serpentine belt and aircon belt to see if noise is reduced or changed.

    Timing?

I highly doubt it's the uni joints guys as he says it still vibrates when it's in neutral......
