Thread: Discovery 1997 tdi, 4 cylinder, Auto, Diesel

When I bought my DIsco it left oil on the ground all the time. I left it for ages just saying it didn't matter, then I finally got around to looking at it and there was 2 very simple problems I fixed myself. Replaced oil cooler lines for about $100 and 15 mins of simple work with a single spanner. I also resealed the vacuum pump with silicone. A little more work, but not very hard. A few hours if you go slow. Leak free for years until I had a hub seal leak (what isuzurover mentioned above) because I converted my hubs to oil lube. I replaced that seal and leak free again.

There are few oil leaks that are complicated to fix. Most are simple if you want to chase them down.

So a bit of an update with my situation.
I have got the beast in my possession now. All in all things don't seem too bad.

However some little things like, the passenger door doesn't remotely lock, the passenger door window will activate down and not return up etc.... (its all on the passengers side).

So anyway, other than that kind of stuff i'm wrapped.

In regards to a automatic transmission, does the gear select (gearstick) aluminate? or not. I wasn't sure, however the cigaret lighter doesn't aluminate either and i was hoping they might be related to the same, or similar fuses.

My gear selection P, N, D,... is illuminated with the headlights on, I can't recall what happens when the lights are off. My cigarette lighter doesn't illuminate at any time.

Not sure about the passenger door problem except for perhaps a poor earth to check in the first instance.

I'm glad that overall the car looks good.

The gear selector should have illumination. There are two tiny bulbs, one either side. Both were burnt out on my old D1, and I replaced them with LED types, as it looked like there was some minor heat damage from the original bulbs in the housings.

For the passenger door, you may find that the actuator has burnt out. As was the case on my D1, but you won't know for sure until you take the door apart.

You need to read up on using the CDL, then try it in a safe spot, then USE it every chance you get (a gravel driveway will do) or--

I have been coming across this topic a bit, and i thought that the general idea was to use it only when/ if you need to (due to stress on gear etc.) ...

but your saying if you don't you it at all theres a chance it will cease up. Ill have to give it a go (out somewhere safe on loose surface... dont wind up the transmission on the first try).

I have been running around in the beast for a few days now. loving it. I took the advice from some earlier posts, i bought a engine saver. have been looking around, i wasn't confident mucking around too much with the wiring.

I wanted to hear some thoughts on using this location for power to the engine saver (see attached image)

Its the exact same spot I picked the power for my Engine Saver. I wasn't sure there was a fuse connected to it so from that terminal that you've highlighted I put an inline fuse to the engine saver alarm. The led bulb I mounted on the bottom left switch blank around the dash - a bit difficult to see but I'm saving the switch panel below the clock for another purpose. I may end up relocating the led globe at some time in the future.
