From what you have said i believe you have cracked the head and not actually blown the gasket , i put pics of my head here when i did mine.

So as some of you may be aware I was stupid last week and flushed my intercooler instead of my radiator in an effort to combat my overheating issue.
I did realise this before starting engine again and pulled it all apart and drained it (which was abit of work) but I believe quite worthwhile as not only have I fixed the cooling problem but have also improved my fuel effeciency considerably last 2 times have put fuel in it has worked out at under 10litres per 100km previous to this I believe my best was about 10.5litres and that was all highway driving sitting about 80kmh.
The down side is I pretty sure I still need to replace at the least the head gasket though Im not losing oil or coolant and neither is mixing my tacho no longer sits steady it is constantly jumping around I am currently putting that down to being my head gasket unless someone has another solution.

Is the engine changing revs as the tacho jumps around? it could just be a dodgy connection at the back of the alternator

Have a feeling it may be a loose connection as it running perfectly in my opinionand it doesn't happen all the time
Maybe I done something similar either way I think best solution is start saving to get myself a second engine and rebuild it and that way it limits down time without a vehicle
Head replacement will only take a weekend if you take your time, good luck finding a good 2nd hand one that wont require a full (read expensive) rebuild.

Hi Mate,
the tacho gets its signals from the back of the alternator. I put a new alternator in mine coz old one was stuffed anyway and i was still getting jumpy tacho.
I fixed it by snipping off the old clip at the alternator end of the wiring (which goes to the tacho) and rewiring a new clip onto it.
the clips get quite dirty and corroded and you dont get a good contact and then your tacho jumps.
you will probably find this will fix it. cost you about $1 instead of messing with the head gasket.

where does he say that? he said there is no leaking water or oil and his tacho jumping is the only indication? thats the way i read it. if its just the tacho i dont see what the head gasket has to do with it.
I keep to my original stance unless you can point out anything else.
