ive had a look at previous posts I always do. if i start a new one it means ive already searched and could not find.
Hi,
some of my injectors are leaking as I have been chasing leaks in my fuel system for some time. I have the new copper washers to solve this although i was thinking, while the injectors are out, is it worthwhile replacing them. I have a good history of the car but I cant find anywhere where the injectors were changed. the car has done 240k.
I have looked at new injectors and i can get a whole set of bosch for about 600AUD. the other thing i noticed is that you can buy just the nozzles for half the price.
my question(s) is/are, is it worth it to put new injector nozzles on? does it make much difference if the old ones are clogged? should i just clean the old ones.
should i just get them tested and if then the spray pattern is out just put new nozzles on?
should i just get new injectors?
when i do any work to the thing i always want to make sure anything i put back is new if it needs to be. i dont just like saying she will do and put a half working part just because its an older engine and not worth it. in my opinion it is always worth it.
does putting new nozzles defeat any purpose? do you need to test springs etc on the body of the injectors?
I am doing a trip to sandy cape next long weekend and i just wanted to do some of the lose ends on it. i wanted to make sure to fix the injector leaks before i left but being me, i dont just wana put the old injectors back if they could use some work to them. id rather do each job once and do it right.
thanks for listening to me, i feel much better now.

If you were to get new nozzles then you would have to send them away to get them fitted/tested I assume.
I would just get new injectors and slap them in.
But in saying that, I've got 220K on the clock and not even considering new injectors.
What is the life span of an injector ??????

Oh and why does the price of the injectors vary so much.
Must be some YUMCHA brands out there.

If I was suspicious of one or some of my injectors, I would get another similar aged secondhand set, then go to a injector service business and ask them to test the lot then choose a balanced set of four out of the best of them.
Discard the faulty ones as they are not repairable.
.
Generally.
Don't bother with testing the tdi Injectors, they are a two stage injector and the cost of testing alone goes close to the cost of replacement, if they come up off spec adjusting them will typically blow out the cost.

yea when you look them up there is generally a fairly cheap set of imitation ones and the bosch ones.
the prices i quoted were for bosch full injectors and bosch nozzles (just the end bit). that is the price difference i meant and one of the questions i was asking regarding just replacing the nozzle part of the injector. it doesnt seem like a difficult job to just replace the nozzles.
some injector places i asked here test the units for free. if they are stuffed then they just get a whole new unit. they dont bother playing around with them. which is why i was wondering if its worth getting the nozzles put on the end.
You could go the middle ground, you can hook the injector up outside of the engine and give it a quick turn over and have a look at the pattern with the Mk1.
If you don't like what you see then get a new set.
note I haven't done this myself, I would assume that it is a two man job, one to crank and one to observe and for the other person to basically turn the engine off straight away.
Don't have fingers in the way, eye protection, etc. etc. do one at a time and point it at a rag in the engine bay.
I guess the only thing is, if you find one that looks rubbish are you just gonna buy one?
For the faff I'd probably just buy a set and change...
How do you know they are leaking and where from ?, there are the copper washers in the head but if worn wont cause a leak or washers on the spill line which would leak if worn but that wont require new injectors.
A lot of TDI 's here on original injectors with 300k plus on them, 330K on mine and cant see any reason to replace yet.
