Got any links to read? Google keeps coming up with the storm alloy wheels and rubbish like that.

South Africa had BMW straight sixes in Defenders at one stage. 2.8L?
I think your problem will be the forward oil pump. The falcon donk sits over & forward of it's cross member. I very much doubt there's enough room/clearance.
Notwithstanding, Ford's 6 speed out of the Territory or D3 would be brilliant. (Planning on low range?). I've never poked my head under either to see which side the front prop shaft is. Graft in a P38 front axle if needed?

Of course you are right about 2.5 diesel 38As. A seniors moment.
They tried a v12 in a 38A and that was the lengthened one.
Still the length was a problem, but hey anything is possible.

Yep, his name is '110dude' The Defender is called the HULK, it runs a Ford 4.1L XFlow Turbo with intercooler and Haltech engine management. It was in 'Outback Challenge 2009' DVD. They finished 7th overall which is a bloody good effort. They planned to fit a brand new LS2 6L after getting passed on the flats doing 110kph. They did buy the engine but never got around to fitting it. Last i heard the HULK is up on blocks in the shed. If you can find the DVD its a very good watch and the course is bloody brutal on the cars.:)
A couple of photos of the green beast.
