Length of motor is major factor as mentioned, adaption wont be too hard as a gent here has an AOD trans mated to an LT230 for his windsor swap so its possible.
Dont worry about the resale...
Just do it - And post LOTS of photos![]()

If you can find a way to stand-alone the ZF6 auto and mate it to the LT230 you'll be able to afford whatever you want.
Thanks everyone for the input....keep it coming. I do agree it would be a tight squeeze. I will do some comparisons with the xr over the weekend. I've also found local 4x4 shop that does certifying for this sort of thing have also done similar project so I will have a chat with them this week and see what they come up with.
Just to clarify she does get used offroad and I'm not giving a single thought to resale......it's too scary :-).

Can I also add that the Ford turbo 6 can be very thirsty when worked hard. It is a brilliant long range cruiser. The F6 in Sedan Form weighs in at 1.8 Tonne. I think your Disco will be about 2.5. They need Premium ULP. (Exy) Gas injection is probably the go. The F6 has a massive intercooler which needs lots of Air Flow which might make you rethink bulbar etc. I would suggest a decent cooling system as well. I cannot tell you how awesome a motor this really is. Get the gearing right and you will tour at about 10 L/KM. The problem I have is a very heavy right foot. My 19 inch rear tyres are looking tired at 14000km. It is a 5 sec to 100 KM/H car. When I was a kid you needed 1/5 a million $ to get anything this quick. Love it. Sorry I forgot this is a LR Forum. My Defender takes about 18 secs. The FPV can't go where the Defender goes. The Defender still gives just as big smile. It is just different. A Defender with that engine. I don't think you would get me out of it.

I thought it was to keep the Discovery slower than the rangerover (which had a BMW 2.5td at the time).
Intention was TD4 for freelander, TD5 for disco/defender and TD6 for RR. But only the TD5 actually happened.
But a TD6 version of the TD5 will still be a lot shorter than a Falcon 6. Some quality time with a tape measure will give the first yay or nay.
I wouldn't scale falcon economy to LR economy based on weight alone. Aerodynamics (or the lack thereof) suggests about twice as much air needs pushed out the way with a LR. Then you've got 3x as many diffs to turn which take a little bit more again.
BMW tried to fit a TD6 into a 38A and built a propotype.
There are photos on the web somewhere.
They had to increase the overall length and AFAIR the wheelbase so no I don't think a 6 will fit in a D1. Although a company in UK did put a couple of VM 6s into Classics.
Regards Philip A
Which td6 is that Phillip? They built thousands of production 2.5 td6 P38's. Sold everywhere but Australia apparently.
People have put Nissan LD28's (6 cyl 2.8 diesel) into RRC's and Discoveries. I've seen pictures of Toyota 4.2 6 cyl diesels in an RRC and he stepped out the whole front end. Looked horrible.
I have no idea how the falcon 6 compares in length to those.
As I was saying, one of the reasons. Back then, and even now, there has been a lot of cross over between the RR and Disco with engines, but they did have the TD6 "Storm" engine earmarked for the RR. Sounds like PhillipA has spoken about the extended P38 which sounds like it was built to suit the TD6 Storm engine - but both the TD6 Storm and seemingly extended P38 were both scrapped.
