Just yesterday i encountered a problem with my brake lights. A Bikey was kind enough to inform me, as we were driving down the road.

I have seen several discussions regarding brake light switch, and just wanted to run a few things past you guys!

1. i checked the fuses - both under the wheel and in the engine bay relating to lights/ brake lights etc.... nothing obvious detected

2. when i put the headlights on, the break lights worked 10% of the time ... as i pumped the pedal, the light only responded a few times.

3. so all globes seem to be fine.

4. adjusting the position of the fuse box/ also the security alarm in the engine bay seemingly influenced partial connectivity of the brake lights.

5. i had a look at the break light switch and would be happy to replace it (just would like to find the part number/ link to buy the right one online somewhere)

Has anyone had a similar situation to this?
Could anything else be causing the problem?

Just to clarify, the break lights are not working/ reliable ... this i an attempt to get them back up and running (they are not stuck on all the time). Im driving a Disco 97 TDi ... any help appreciated. cheers.

Would suggest that if moving fuse box Influenced power to lights, then Brake light Switch aint the Issue..........

It doesn't appear to be the wiring/ fuse box positioning.

Further inspection of the brake light switch reveals the bottom pin has heaps of play in it ... sometimes it works/ sometimes it doesn't. Im surprised a well concealed part like this would break .... (it wasn't the moving switch part that went, but rather the pin)

Has anyone replaced this switch recently and if so, is there a part number for online purchase?

There seems to be plenty available online. Just google "Brake light switch land rover discovery 1". It seems there is a difference between the ABS version and the non-ABS version, just make sure you select the right one.

i was chasing my tail with my brake lights, spasmodic working

sometimes they would work, most of the time when i put my foot on the brake, the light would come on for a split second and then disappear even though my foot was still on the brake.

i just had my brake switch replaced by the mechanic all i know is that the switch had multiple wires as i have ABS on my 95 disco. sorry dont know no. as he fixed it before i knew he had done it.
this switch was different to the one i had on my petrol 97 non-abs model which i replaced myself.

now to find the cause of the window brake light, everything looks correct with 12v both sides of the bulb so i guess a problem with the earth connection, just need a few hours to investigate.anyone know where the earth point is?

Non ABS part number is 13H3735L, did have the ABS number but can't find it now
