The rollers and cage that associated with those collars looked fine. All gummed up with grease(and chucked out), but didn't look overly worn or damaged.
Didn't see what brand they were either. Could have been cheapies .. possibly. I got Timkens tho.
I've had 'a bearing noise' for the past 6 months or so, which I think is the rear diff pinion bearing(just a guess, but feels/sounds like it).
I got two ATBs to fit front and rear in preparation to fix the diff, that is, if it did turn out to be the pinion bearing.
Mechanic is under the pump, and has yet to rebuild my diffs .. so I've had to live with this bearing sounding noise since.
The only anomaly with that noise tho, is that occasionally it does go away .. sort of. The noise sounds more like worn mud tyres.
But then a couple of weeks ago I noticed more noise which steadily got worse, and then the other day coming through a 80k/h right hander it got much louder!
Obvious thing was a LHS bearing .. being loaded up through the righthander.
Up till about 6 months ago, D1 hardly made any noises, very smooth other than typical 300 Tdi vibes/harshness/noise. Drivetrain has always been smooth and pretty quiet.
Car hardly sits still as it's my daily driver I estimate it's sat for a day maybe only 5 times in the past 2 years .. so definitely hasn't sat for the bearings to wear out in that manner.
Interesting part is both those wear marks are inner bearings on both LHS hubs.
Spindles are usable. Have the typical wear marks, but not worn badly for the bearings to sit uneven or loosely. They need a good push to slide the hub onto the spindle, so they feel like they seat tight.
