ATM, I'm thinking it's the stub axle too.
Rear seal was fine, no grease leaking, and plenty of grease in there too .. in fact I think a bit too much in the cavity between the two bearings.
Strangely tho there were two grease colours in there, partly reddish and some black. Rear only had lots of black grease.
What's weird with my grinding noise is the way it comes and goes. At 80k/h it comes in loud, and doesn't change pitch or level now with turning, like it did the other week.
Does change level(or loudness) with undulations tho at 80-ish k/h. Quieter with rises.. so it sounds as though loading on it makes it louder/quieter.
But at 90-ish k/h it's basically gone, almost completely, but tyre noise may be masking some of the noise, but the difference between noise level at 80 and 90 is what has me ....

noise comes back at about 95+ ish.
And the noise can be moderated with throttle too. more pedal, less noise, back right off, and grrrrrrrrrr!(that is both me and the car!

)
I have this one section of slightly downhill run coming off the freeway, brand spanking new asphalt. I can coast in neutral, and there is basically zero tyre noise on this new surface.
At 90(ooops! too fast

) .. zero noise coasting, as it approaches 85k/h the noise starts growling .. and at 80k/h(with no risk to any demerit points too!

) .. it grumbles and growls madly.
Then gradually quietens again as I slow more .. by 70k/h gone again.
I did check the surface of the two stub axles, and they may be not OK, but felt OK to my basically untrained hands. Bearings seated nicely.
Only other thing I'm considering is a strangely worn CV, or maybe the needle bearing for the CV shaft(in the hub), due to the throttle on/off affecting the level of the noise.
Brother sat in the front too and he reckons it's coming from the left front too.
I just got under this morning and checked unis and all manner of brackets and mounts for looseness, and nothing looks out of the ordinary .. just a bit more play in the gearbox mounts than I remember on my RRC.
