Put the transfer case back in after having it out for two days to replace the intermediate shaft "o" rings and the mainshaft seal.
Lesson learned..... there are 3 different length bolts in the 5 + one stud that hold the transfer case to the gearbox, if you put longer bolts in two of the forward facing holes, (RH side of gearbox), one of them will contact the intermediate gear and lock up the transmission, did the old head in for a while trying to figure out if I had put some internals in wrong. But all ok and fingers crossed for no more oil leak........there at least. Gaz:cool:
Loaded it up and went to work as usual, even with a ZF transmission on its last legs it still got me around work. When its hot it hunts around for gears - yes done a service and changed fluids a few times - 440K km and the last 200K working has just worn the thing out. It got hot a few times before the bigger cooler. Rather than a rebuild I found a low km one from Triumph Rover, getting it put in next week. Its on the bench now, done seals and gaskets but can't deal with that lump and the transfer box by myself from underneath.
Thanks BertR for fixing the 'too' typo on the heading - I know we are not supposed to pick up or mention stuff like that, which is why I didn't, but now you have its good.
Discovered that while Disco panhard rods are the same as RRC, the bushes are different. I installed all the suspension bits I had from my abandoned RRC project onto the disco which included an APT adjustable panhard rod with new Super Pro bushes. I had a bit of a dead zone in the steering and it was susceptible to changes in the camber of the road and wasn't real good to drive.
Put proper size bushes in this arvo, will take it for a drive tomorrow and see.
Took it for a drive today and having the right size panhard bushes has made a huge difference, drives quite nicely.
So I fitted this
