Neither. It is a small metal bowl wedged up high on the body near the rear axle. Its the first stop in the fuel line from the fuel tank on the way to the fuel filter. It extends the life of the fuel filter. The bowl accumulates sediment and needs to be cleaned out. I clean it out every 10,000-12,000 kms, easy job 15-20 mins.

No kidding. Is this a petrol or diesel, or both thing? I'll have to give that a go, I can't imagine that the car has ever had it done

I think its more a piece of mind clean out, but I've seen some pretty bad ones in my time and really 10,000-12,000 km is probably a bit overkill.

I think I used to have one on my 3.5 though I never cleaned it out. Was nearly 20 years ago so may be mistaken.
