My mechanic made a comment a while before that, when he asked me if I had any oil in it!

My oil pressure switch was leaking from the front of the plastic cone shaped body. Assuming it's original, then 20-ish years, you'd expect the plastic to deteriorate in that time.
I gooped it up with a heap of Permatex silicon(some orange looking stuff I have sitting about), smoothed it out, tucked it into the front of the cone, into the spade connector .. leak stopped(kind'a).
Turns out there is a small weep from the oil pump - block gasket too(will try to do a fix) and I think a small bit from the oil filter rubber gasket too. Oil settles on top of the diff over time, so it looks like the diff is leaking.
Mine was the original one also, was leaking from the plastic but at the engine end not the spade end. It was dripping about 3 drips per second whilst running. The new one in not overly happy with it wouldn't tighten up much without skipping a thread, it's not leaking but I know it's not done up tight enough. I'll get a different brand one down the line and change it. Maybe one with an earlier warning sign.
    Cheers Jim

replaced power steering pump and serpentine belt today.
The seemingly innocuous serpentine belt was the actual culprit tho.

have had this maddening knocking noise at the front of the motor for a short while now.
Sounded like the serpentine tensioner, which was replaced. No difference.
Checked all and sundry items that run on the belt and found the pwr steering pump had a knock noise when turned from side to side too.

Triple checked everything else to be sure no other noises could be making this knocking noise.

But, giving the tensioner both more tension and less tension also rid the tdi of this knocking at the front.

So a cheapo chinese pump was bought to get me by, while I get my original pump rebuilt.
New pump definitely feels smoother and has no knock noise when the flange is turned quickly one way then the other .. like the old pump does.
I assume some gear pump thing inside has a bit of play.

anyhow, all back together and the knocking noise got worse .. much worse than before!

As lot of stuff was already half removed, I pulled the new tensioner off again and it feels tight, is tight up on it's mount when bolted down in place, so no slipping from the tennsioner.
The I placed finger in nooks and crannys and found that the distance of the rest stp on the tensioner was about 2-3mm.
Doh! .. the knocking is just the tensioner hitting itself.
Issue was why so little room between the resting tabs on the tensioner. Belt is pretty new. Err somethign or other shows a landy part No. same as an old worn one I had lying about .. Dayco branded. I think 1580 length PK7 type .. as per usual.
Can't remember where I got it.
But, I know it's only about 500k definitley less than 1000klm old. I replaced as the old one had done about 20K and had bad wear marks on one side. No way did it stretch that much in less than 1000k's.

SO the spare came out, and fitting it showed a massive difference in ease of fitment.
Where the 1000k old 'Dayco' allowed easy fitment, the new Dayco belt made it tight as to fit. Result was that the knocking I was chasing was a result of a supposedly 'Dayco' quality belt being too long .. both belt marked 1580 lengths, but the new one is at least 20mm shorter.
Now the clearance of the tensioner rest stops with the belt fitted is more than 10mm maybe 15mm or so .. end result is knocking was gone

But I reckon pump still needed to be looked at, and two hoses were leaking, so had to be done too.

Going to be interesting to see how well this cheapo($100) pump will last.
    Arthur.

Took off the hiline wheels with hwy bias tyres and put on my old sunnies with muddies now that trips to the high country are back on the agenda.
Alway assumed the sunnies with 31x10.5’s were a heavier wheel/tyre combination but no.
The hilines are about a few kg heavier each corner!
At least that is the case now with the worn muddies and near new 247/75’s on the hilines.

Installed 2" HD springs in the front, I think he said 235lbs from LRA.
New rear D bushes and sway bar bushes.
Installed some more sound proofing on the roof.
Put baby seat in the back gonna get a Xmas tree when it cools.
Got some down pipe gaskets hopfully install them, get rid of that lawnmower sound.
Found out another bearing is on the way out, hopfully just needs a tighten. I need some dust caps for the front, my drive ways 500m of dirt so I'm putting it down to grit getting in.
Now that I got my springs I need to ad some weight, might throw another battery in the front or strap a couple of bricks to the bull bar What did you do with or to your Disco todayWhat did you do with or to your Disco today I'll go get my winch one day....

Replaced both front bearings yesterday, i suspected the passenger side to be on its way out. Went for a spin to the shops by the time I got back the bearing had destroyed itself... Spent half the day cleaning the casing off the stub axle.
Drivers side was all rusty but the bearing survived, I'll clean and repack it for an emergency.
Bought some dust covers for them the old ones had disintegrated, hopfully it will resolve my bearing failure issues....

235 seems a lot. How is the ride? What colour code?
I have old LRA 180s (reds?) with winch, dual batts and they do a fairly good job but I have thought about upgrading.

I'm actually really happy with the ride they are purple yellows. And considering I've only got the bull bar on the ride is pretty nice not too hard, one I put my winch and battery in it will soften it a lot more which it does need. It was bouncy as and with the rear sway bar shagged it was terrible, it handles like a race car in comparison.
Andrew at LRA was worried about the geometry with HD springs but it didn't seem to raise it pasar the 2".
They were the last 2"springs they had until January that would fit so I took the punt, but they work on a changeover basis so if I'm not happy I can change them or even put my stock ones back until they get a shipment. Overall pretty happy though What did you do with or to your Disco today

Got around to doing a couple of tasks that needed to be done. I randomly modified one of the side step whilst exiting a parking bay. There was a trolley bay on the left side. I was facing out and thought I had moved far enough out before swinging left. Got the side step back in shape and whilst it was off I trimmed 25mm of the front end. Tyres where rubbing at lock. Then I trimmed 25 mm of the other side step. Next was the front diff pinion seal and front transfer case seal. Got the diff pinion seal done. Unfortunately the socket I need for the transfer case is in my toolbox at work. So that one will have to wait for a bit.

    1997 300tdi big end bearings

    368k

#1bearing had something run through it, but thankfully not hard/long enough to mark the crank.

I have no history on this motor, but could tell sump had been off before. Way too much rtv applied, and scrape marks.

Photo: Piston 1 to 4, top to bottom.

    Not too bad considering kms.
