replaced power steering pump and serpentine belt today.
The seemingly innocuous serpentine belt was the actual culprit tho.
have had this maddening knocking noise at the front of the motor for a short while now.
Sounded like the serpentine tensioner, which was replaced. No difference.
Checked all and sundry items that run on the belt and found the pwr steering pump had a knock noise when turned from side to side too.
Triple checked everything else to be sure no other noises could be making this knocking noise.
But, giving the tensioner both more tension and less tension also rid the tdi of this knocking at the front.
So a cheapo chinese pump was bought to get me by, while I get my original pump rebuilt.
New pump definitely feels smoother and has no knock noise when the flange is turned quickly one way then the other .. like the old pump does.
I assume some gear pump thing inside has a bit of play.
anyhow, all back together and the knocking noise got worse .. much worse than before!
As lot of stuff was already half removed, I pulled the new tensioner off again and it feels tight, is tight up on it's mount when bolted down in place, so no slipping from the tennsioner.
The I placed finger in nooks and crannys and found that the distance of the rest stp on the tensioner was about 2-3mm.
Doh! .. the knocking is just the tensioner hitting itself.
Issue was why so little room between the resting tabs on the tensioner. Belt is pretty new. Err somethign or other shows a landy part No. same as an old worn one I had lying about .. Dayco branded. I think 1580 length PK7 type .. as per usual.
Can't remember where I got it.
But, I know it's only about 500k definitley less than 1000klm old. I replaced as the old one had done about 20K and had bad wear marks on one side. No way did it stretch that much in less than 1000k's.
SO the spare came out, and fitting it showed a massive difference in ease of fitment.
Where the 1000k old 'Dayco' allowed easy fitment, the new Dayco belt made it tight as to fit. Result was that the knocking I was chasing was a result of a supposedly 'Dayco' quality belt being too long .. both belt marked 1580 lengths, but the new one is at least 20mm shorter.
Now the clearance of the tensioner rest stops with the belt fitted is more than 10mm maybe 15mm or so .. end result is knocking was gone
But I reckon pump still needed to be looked at, and two hoses were leaking, so had to be done too.
Going to be interesting to see how well this cheapo($100) pump will last.
