#1bearing had something run through it, but thankfully not hard/long enough to mark the crank.

I have no history on this motor, but could tell sump had been off before. Way too much rtv applied, and scrape marks.

Photo: Piston 1 to 4, top to bottom.

    Not too bad considering kms.

How big a job is it? Mine is getting near the 300k mark.

Not a big job, just unpleasant when you dont have a lift/pit and have to work on your back. Chassis rails on axle stands, front axle at full droop and you can drop the sump to get at the bearing caps. Plenty of threads on here with more details.

Been a busy few days preparing for holiday.
New headliner finally after 6 months without it in, not 100% happy with it. It was a rush job and I brushed on the glue instead of buying some cans. It was $35 for 4ltrs I couldn't resist, so it didn't stick in some spots and a few fingerprints in other spots. Overall I'll live with for 6 months most of the **** spots are unseen.
All the plastic trims reinstalled in the back.
Wheel alignment done today, of course the machine didn't have the right year so I gave him the measurements. Still have a fair bit of play in the steering wheel buy at least it's straight.
    New coolant temp sensor (ecu)
New resonator hotdog at the back, sounds heaps better and drives a bit better. I only had a hi flow muffler and it was too loud for long drives.
Picked up a panhard rod with poly bushes from the wreckers I'll put that in tommorow. My bushes are shagged and for $25 it's easier to swap the rod over. Also picked up a hand full of green and yellow relays and a serpentine belt which looks new, all for spares under the seat.
Done a few other things but memorys fading What did you do with or to your Disco todayWhat did you do with or to your Disco today

Not so much today, but started a few days ago and finished today.
Wonnagatta via lot of other places east to there, then south to Dargo and home.

Did it with ease, even tho some parts replacements are trying to kill it.
Viscous unit found to be dead, so any hill saw coolant temps close to 100C. Never above that.
Strangely tho up some very arduous steep tracks like Hernes and Cynthia Range(some parts) .. I was mainly worried about Herne Spur coz it takes a while .. but it never reached above it's normal temps(83ish).

Just these damned hopeless Yoko tyres. all but one got damaged! two punctures(one sidewall too!) ... one has some sliced tread near the shoulder.
The one not damaged was the spare .. coz it stayed on the rear door the whole time.
Camped at Wonnagatta for a couple of nights, so had the time to repair the sidewall(dodgy yes, but held up well).

It was all downhill from here(but in a good way!)

Cynthia Range Trk, last klm or so to Eaglevale.

.. so it's off to sort out the rad fan soon.

    Got tyres yesterday.
    Yokohama's just had to go.
Ended up with 4 separate issues on two tyres on my VHC trip, one of which was a sidewall rip. Had to plug it, and didn't want to rely on spare tyre, and end up with more damage and then have no spare!
So .. siewall leak was slow enough to warrant just airing up every 30 mins or so(had dad with us too, and probably good to have a break for his sake on Zeka Spur track anyhow.
Used a rope plug on sidewall, which I had every doubt would hold .. but surprisingly held all the way to Dargo .. 4 days later!
But the front left must have had 2 punctures in it. I just kept airing it up every day .. would hold down to low 20's by the end of the day, but overnight would lose it all.
Got front fixed on the way home at Traralgon, only to get home and find it was down to low 20's again! .. got that fixed again next day.
Then the rear with the sidewall puncuture started leaking again(via another puncture in the tread this time).

enough was enough .. so instead of airing it up again .. and wasting any time or voltage on it .. I just drove to a local tyrepower and got a new set of Cheapie Chinesey 245/75 16s! ...

First thing noticed was that they had tyre presures all over the show. all tyres varied from 36 to 44!
Tyres I got are HIFLY AT601's 10 ply, more highway than off road tread pattern, but 101% quieter than the Yoko G012's.
What I thought was another loose wheel bearing was just the Yokohama tyres whining that they've given up the ghost.
I have a really nice smooth run home on a newly surfaced freeway, where I thought wheelbearings need to be rechecked again .. but now with the new tyres .. zip! .. nothing, not a whir, whine or whinge.

Hopefully they'll have a bit more strength than the Yoko's had.

That was my only complaint with the G012's .. just zero strength. Otherwise nice tyres in terms of grip, even with >60K klms on them.
But even from new, they made far too much noise for the tread pattern type they had.
A few months after I got my D1(tyres came on the truck), brother got his D2 with woeful muddies on it.
He changed them and went with BFG KO2's and the noise level of the Yoko's suddenly became apparent when compared to the BFGs.

Noise got so bad about a year or more ago, on this newly surfaced freeway, I'd use a a test run, I was convinced that I was having either wheel bearing issues, or even diff(pinion) wear ... or something.

Yesterday I put my roads tyres back on, heaps better to drive so much grunt lost in big tyres.
Modified front grille for better airflow, semi saudi.
Today installed the winch finally! Took about 30secs, longest part was getting the grille off. Wiring later in the week. Its a big heavy 15k lb with a cable, chinese but im gonna open up the box and try and westernise it a little 🤣🤣
Just need to buy some rollers and switch for in the car.
    Cheers Jim

Replaced lash caps, one was very worn, and reset valves. Amazed what a difference it made. Much smoother down low in the rev range.

Fitted engine guard temp gauge / alert. Max temp seen so far is 87, despite factory gauge hovering at half way....

So got it too 98 degrees. Long climb, 110, ac on, towing camper , 41 deg day. What’s the max that’s acceptable?

long term, I'd say 110°C should be 'acceptable' ... where acceptable acceptability would be determined by how regular and strict you are with servicing.

When I drove Cobar to Broken Hill(with a small detour) .. I reckon maybe 4 hrs, 40+C all the way, lowest temp I got was low 100's(102-103 ish) .. primarily held between 105-110 for the most part. Max I saw was 117°C and soiled my pants and back wayyy off, AC off, slowed right down(not stopped) .. cooled back quickly to the high 90's ... pants much less spoiled at this point now.

Obviously you don't want engine temps running at 110°C for the entire life of the engine! That'd be mad!.
What I'm saying .. for that drive .. I don't see why 110C would be an issue, if that what you have to put up with.

I just knocked up a scoop for mine .. wayyyyy better now.
