No i do not have aftermarket gauge. It is factory, so i was a bit scared, but it went down as quick as it went up. Coolant level is still the same. Which is why i am hoping it is a cooling system issue rather than a head gasket issue. Still, for it to move like that probably means i got the poor girl pretty hot.

Hi, sounds like the cooling system doing exactly what it's supposed to do when fully loaded at 110kph! Temp came down suddenly as it went up suggests that the thermostat opened just when it needed to and prevented an overheat just like it is supposed to do. The fact that it only happened under hi load and weight conditions and that it wouldn't get hot under normal driving conditions and also the fact that you have no coolant loss is a sure sign of everything running as it should. Someone suggested a low coolant alarm in one of these responses, a worthy investment. Should a hose let go or similar, this will save you a lot of coin. Prevention is better than cure, if your not 100% confident then get under that bonnet and have a good look around.. Check for brittle hoses or poor sealing at hose ends. It's important to keep your engine bay clean this way you can check for evidence of new leaks and react to them quickly. It also helps with cooling and you may find just what that burning smell was caused by!

im almost certain it was clutch burning up a bit while i was revving it out of the deep sand. car was still cold too didnt occur to me till after. as far as leaks it has all the common LR ones, none too serious. apart from leaky power steering res hoses, which i will change next fortnight and diesel leak at spill rail which i cant seem to fix. i am taking it to diesel expert round the corner to fix that, ive tried too many times.

the engine is nice n clean like u suggested, i always clean it up.

been looking at a few options since the weekend for temp gauge and low coolant alarm and at the same time EGT.

can the coolant level sensor be combined with temp sensor? one that plugs into top of thermostat housing or do they have to be two different things?

They tell you two different things. The Engine Saver coolant level sensor is a very small thing, just a red light on your dash and a buzzer. I also use a TM2 with a thermocouple bolted to the thermostat housing. Since installing both its been really good to know that if anything coolant related is going wrong I'd know about it right away. The Engine Saver has already paid for itself by preventing an overheat when one of the heater hoses started leaking down the back of the block where I couldn't see it - coolant was low and it told me right away. Saved the newish head and gasket at least.

EGT gauge is very handy for power tweaks but not critical for engine heath if in stock form.

Where does it screw into though? The engine saver i mean?

In the TDI it replaces the top bung in the radiator. Its made of nylon which insulates a circuit through the centre, as soon as the circuit is broken (no coolant) it starts the noise and flashing. Can be a wierd sound as the noise begins intermittently with the sloshing action, then as coolant is below the sensor its full noise.

Be nice if they made one out of brass, with an insulating core and a sensor within that - which I might play with one day, but what is there really works, and there are other priorities.

VDO have one too but its a general thing and not purpose made, and probably costs as much.

yea i was looking at that water level kit.

in terms of water temp and EGT though i was looking at VDO stuff. i just like the look of their gauges;

i asked them for more info. i can get a pre threaded blanking plate where the sensor can be attached. was thinking similiar kit for water temp, they have ones that go to 120C or 150C. they also have special dash covers where you can fit the two gauges to mount. recon would look nice. better than the digital kits you get.

Does any one know the temp range of the middle section of the temp gauge?

if i am correct in what you are asking from what ive just learned here is that it is hard to tell what the temp gauge is trying to tell you. basically can be anywhere from 86C to 105C and after 105C it suddenly decides to tell you and jumps up. so mid range it couls really be anything with that 19C range.

That's what I was thinking as I fitted falcon fans to my disco and at the moment are wired direct to ignition and difference on the from before with a sad viscous fan is marginal according to the gauge
