    TDI300 auto cruise control

I recently purchased a 97 TDi auto and it does not have cruise control. I am led to believe that cruise could be factory fitted to the diesels but was not that common. So this raises a few questions.

Why is factory cruise in the TDi a rare thing ?

How does the factory cruise work if there is no engine ECU ?

Is fitting aftermarket cruise worth it as the 300 TDi auto is not actually a ball of fire and (IMO) would struggle to maintain a constant speed, in my case 100kph on trips.

Any experience or (contructive) comments are welcome.

Any aftermarket cruise control will work using a magnet and pickup on a drive shaft. Vacuum can be sourced from the vac pump for the brakes. The AP60 kit works just fine, not too dear.

    Example:

I like cruise control to ease my right leg on long trips, and if it can't hold a speed it drops out and I just engage it again on the next flat or down hill section.

I have the ap60 fitted to my tdi auto and it sits happily at 100kph even with the camper trailer on the back, saying that i dont use it often as most road uses dont know how to sit on a constant speed so its an endless game of set and reset.

Australian Delivery 300TDi's did not come with with "Factory" cruise control.
It required a Drive By Wire throttle pedal & ECU amongst other things.

There a are couple of imports running around with it & from memory LRA bought one in.

My old D1 & My FIL's current D1 has After Market Cruise control & no problems.

    Good luck.
    Cheers

I have a 96 Tdi ES and it does not have cruise. The V8 does. I suspect that LR left it off the Tdi due to the lack of power.
    Dave.

I was asked " Is it ignorance or apathy?" I replied "I don't know and I don't care."
