Sounds like the centre diff lock is partially locked causing the binding "transmission windup" and unlocking - the bang.
Has it just done this once or does it all the time.

Hello all
I have a 94 300tdi disco , 520,000km on the old girl
We bought said car for beach fishing and i fell in love with her , doesnt use oil or water , fuel efficient and great on the beach .
Problem i have is when i reverse out of my driveway / carpark and have wheels turned mid to full lock something is "binding up" . Once driving straight i get a massive bang after about 10 to 15m forward . Car is fine otherwise . Its as if something just binds up and then bang it frees itself .
We have 3 mech's in town and not one of them will look at it , The noise sounds like its coming from front half of the car (transfer case forward) . There is no "clicking" like a cv its just bang then nothing . All drive line fluids are full .
It really would be a shame to see the car taken to the wreckers as we get so much enjoyment from her , but unfortunately unless its something i can fix i wont have much option .
Ideas ??? Thanks in advance Adam

started about 2/3 weeks ago , does it every time i reverse
If the transfer case is locked you should see the telltale light on the dash, another possibility is the rear suspension balljoint is knackered.
Get under the rear with a tyre lever or large screwdriver and see if you can move it.

Have not locked transfer case in over a yr , just tried to and it wont go in . looked underneath and there is alot of oxidization on the linkage . Will spray it up with some inox and let it soak .
Am unsure what the " suspension ball joint " is ??
These have to be regularly used or they will seize up - just move in an out every month or so.
Get the CDL working - put it in and drive forward a couple of meters (light should be on) - disengage (light may not go out) and drive back a few meters (if light is still on it should then go out). Repeat.
Then see if you issue backing is still there - if it is look elsewhere.
Something similar can happen when changing hi/lo range in the dogs are not locked but when it goes bang and disengages you go into transfer case neutral but you said all was Ok when you hear the bang.

Just a thought if you need other ideas - hand brake? (Connected to transfer case)
Thanks Garry
I just got lazy , normally i do engage CDL every so often . working away and beach conditions good it just slipped my mind .
Not sure but think getting this freed up may go a long way to solving problem . just hope its possible . Think its well and truly stuck
Cheers Adam
Also check that you dont have a broken 1/2 shaft in the front
