    Risk minimisation for 300tdi

I would like to purchase one safety measure for the 300tdi. Which one would everyone recommend I purchase first - the Engine Watchdog TM1 or the Low Water Sensor? I'll eventually get both when funds allow but which one first?

Which one would you get if you could only choose one?

    Many thanks, John.

Why not an Engine Saver TM2 Combo and have the both in one unit.

However if I had to have one it would be the low coolant alarm because rapid loss of coolant is an engine killer and engines rarely overheat when it is full of coolant.

If funds are an issue right now there are cheaper alternatives for the temp monitors.

These look pretty good as well.

id go the low coolant alarm first too. as long as you make sure your cooling system is running well it should not overheat. the coolant alarm will save you though if you drop water.
get the other one if you start tweaking your fuel pump and driving with heavy loads. the order i would get things in would be:
    -low coolant alarm
    -EGT kit
-Water temp kit. same as the one you already have factory but much more accurate. the factory one waits till your car is bout to boil before it decides to move.

You already have water temp gauge and it is good enough. Instead of an additional water temp gauge I would get a engine block/head temp sensor (as I have with my Engine Saver TM2 Combo) as it picks up changes in engine temps much quicker that the water based system. Also (if you don't have a low water alarm) any coolant based system (OEM or Aftermarket) will most likely still show normal temp when there is little or no coolant in the engine where a metal sensor will pick up changes very quickly.

or that, but i disagree the current water temp gauge is good enough. i think they are rubbish unless you put one of the ones you mentioned. easier job doing the plug on the thermo housing though. probably tells you just as much and it a low coolant alarm its a good mix.

IMO I would go with the TM1 first; it will pick up changes in motor temp very quickly and also has a an oil pressure alarm. I would install a low coolant alarm as well (as soon as funds permitted). An EGT unit is probably not necessary unless you are tweaking your fuel pump etc.
