Whats involved in raising my D1 2"?

    Hi everybody
Can anyone tell me whats involved in lifting my 1998 Auto 300tdi D2? I have seen a 2' lift kit on ebay.

Any info as to what I have to change (eg gear shift etc) would be great.

That kit lifts the body off the chassis and will not raise your chassis, gearbox,or fuel tank clearances and if you have a bulbar it will look lower than the body. It would also require an engineers certificate. This is the sort of thing that Hilux owners do because they like the look of their chassis.
If your car is standard now then just get some 2" over coil springs for it. any more than 2" and it gets more involved

This ebay ad gives me more questions than answers.

    1. Exactly how many blocks do you get with the kit?

    2. How do they secure the body blocks over the rear wheel arch? (they don't bolt in)

    3. How do they secure the blocks either side of the gearbox? (as above)

Being 70mm diameter means nothing because they are going to be sitting on 30mm diameter blocks on the outriggers

You will also need an extension for your transfer case shifter

I don't know how the body lift will affect the auto shifter, someone else will have to answer that one.

Do you have airbags fitted to your disco? If so body lifts are not legal

If you want more ground clearance then fit 2" taller springs and taller tyres, that's all you'll need, Regards Frank.

As per the others, don't get a body lift kit, all that does is give more space for big tyres, but is a pain to get all the little bits right like shift lever, bullbar, some wiring etc. And you'll still get hung up on the ruts same as before unless you fit big tyres.
All I've done is a suspension lift kit (2" has no real downsides) and bigger tyres (235/85/16, same size as Defenders). The kit just has springs and shocks, easily done in the shed. My tyres are a bit tall for the D1, so I've had to trim the rear of the rear arches and adjust the steering stop.

Ring suspension stuff or goto their website
Pick disco 1 2 inch lift. Pay them and give them your address.
A box will arrive read the instixrions so you know how to identify the correct. locamtions for the four springs
Safely remove all the bits in your vehicle that resemble the bits in the box,put the bits in your box into the vehicle and put the leftovers in the box ready for disposal.

Done, usually takes about 9 days from finding the site and ordering till you've got some extra chassis clearance and start worrying about the actual height of 2.0 m car parks.

Why all the body lift haters?
A 2'' body lift and bigger wheels will give you the same clearance as a 2'' spring lift and the same wheels, however with the body lift your CofG will be lower and your link angles better.

If I had a choice I would go spring lift (I did) its much easier than a body lift at 2 inches and reasonable tyres you don't have to worry about anything else. If you go big tyres as well then you may have to trim guards if you get extended shocks then think about extended brake lines and relocation cones or retainers on your springs

Not quite correct, it will give the same clearance under the axles, but the chassis sits lower (hence c of g lower as you said), so the rampover angle, and approach/departure angles are not as good as with the suspension lift. Suspension lifts are more common than body lifts, which probably tells the story.

You will not need to mess around with brake line etc. if you purchase a 2" spring and shock lift; however, this combination is considerably more expensive than the body lift in your link. Your steering may feel slightly different but not enough to be considered unusual. I would go a spring lift before a body lift and if you're going to fit 2" springs I would also fit longer shocks as you may run out of travel on the shocks when you are off-road. Just my 2c.
