Sorry for resurrecting and old thread, but I was doing some maths regarding the fuel economy of my '96 Tdi manual and I thought that it was using a little too much fuel. This is after removing a large alloy roof rack. It certainly improves the performance (I never thought that I would use that word in relation the the trusty tdi :) ) and it seemed to be more economical, but at the bowser it used 71 litres for 634 kilometres, so I was somewhat disappointed. But I then checked the odometer, which was now reading 110 km. I checked the distance on google which listed it as 116, plus I had a short trip of about a km, which should have been about 117 km on the odometer. Working this out and applying it to the trip distance of 634km, it means that I am using about 10.5 ltr per 100 km, which considering the road, isn't too bad. It also means the the odometer distance of 634 should have read about 674, a discrepancy of about 6 - 6.5%. I think the speedo is about right as every time I go through a speed trap, I seem to be right on the speed indicated.
Tom
P.S. my disco has 294K km.
