I'm not too concerned about paint discoloration on a twenty year old Landy. It'll have its first lot if 'bush pinstripes' soon lol:D

Just one consideration before you remove. I have had a chat to a few people about this since the thread went up and then ran a small experiment on it myself to see.
The feedback I got was that by retaining the under bonnet insulation you are actually reducing engine temps because of it's inability to absorb heat. While it may seem that removal of the insulation allows the engine bay to breath easier and not be stifled, if you remove it the underside of the bonnet heats up to a temp far higher than if you had the insulation on. The under side of the bonnet not only retains heat for long period it also relays that heat back onto the engine and inside the engine bay.
I've got a pretty good base point for how hot my Disco runs (97 tdi) across of range of daily temps, up hills, driving over extended distances etc. due to my digital gauge, so I took my insulation out and ran the Disco around for 3 days. On average the engine ran 5 degrees hotter under all circumstances and occasionally got up to 90-95 on long trips (never gets to 90 ever with the insulation on).
Based on this, if my insulation ever wears out I'll be going to a wrecker to source another. 5-8 degrees hotter doesn't sound like much and you will still be running at a safe operating temp, but given the sensitivity of the tdi to overheat I'd prefer to eliminate as much risk as possible.

One wonders why Land Rover didn't vent the bonnets? If there is a build up of heat then air circulation would surely under bonnet temps?
