Broken half shaft ??
I am new to the land rover world, and have recently purchased a 1997 Disco 1 manual 3.9L V8 SE.
For a while it has seemed to be going well and good, until last week when i took it out for a spin, on the way home i lost all gears. I pulled over and had a play with it. I can feel the gear grab but when i release the clutch i get nothing.
Initially i thought the transfer case may of slipped into natural but i hadn't, but when i locked the diff in high or low range, and let the clutch out i get drive.
Can anyone on here please help me get to the bottom of this as i am new to 4x4 and land rovers.
Thanks all in advance.

Broken half shaft ??
I just replied to your post on landroverforums.com, as above half shaft/diff center or axle.

I would suggest that you raise the vehicle with all 4 wheels off the ground and see which spin when the diff is locked and it is in gear. I would think that you have a problem either with the transfer case or outside it on one end. Half shaft, diff, axle etc.
Has the transfer case jumped into neutral?
Don.
Definitely downstream of the transfer - diff, half shaft, cv etc.
To find out. Lift it up as above or leave it on the ground, (handbrake off and chock the wheels, or get somebody else to look while you are on the brakes) unlock the centre diff and try to take off. The shaft leading to the broken end will spin.
That'll narrow it down to either front or rear. See how that goes then we can narrow it down further

**** like this should NOT happen. Did you work it out?
Front drive flange
Agree, front drive flange shredded. I got lots of play on my front right which I will be addressing with new flange and CV before it goes bang too.

Glad it is a relatively simple and cheap fix
