    How does one test to see if these are ready to fail? I'd rather not lose drive in the middle of nowhere.

    It takes 5 -10 minutes (each) to take the drive flange off and have a look at the splines for wear.

    ...and what you are looking for in a worn one is rotational movement between the driving member (CV shaft) and the driven member. Also a close visual inspection of the shaft and driven member splines will show any wear as a decrease in their thickness, thus allowing for rotation against each other. There should be next to nothing in their movement.
