I am running the Hankook RT03 MTs 285/70/R17
Only been running them for a couple of months but they have not given me reason to dislike them yet.
Also way quieter than the Mickey Thompson mts that were on there before

I saw an American comparison which rated the Hankook ATs ahead of more famous rivals.

Spoke to the tyre bloke again today.
I keep leaning towards the Dick Cepteks.
I guess he did a good sales pitch on me.
Damn Crusher range apparently is not available in Aus short of them ordering and waiting 12 weeks so i will go the Mud Country range instead.
A bit more pricey sure but im hoping the extra bux make a difference to longevity and ultimately getting me out of those nasty/fun places.
Thanks for the advice guys.
I will post up a pic when all is done.
Ive tried cheap tyres. Ive now got brand name ones on now. Wont buy cheap again. The difference is well worth the money IMO
Dave
Here is a pic of a very expensive tyre, Cooper in fact, around $300+ each.
I don't understand why people think that high prices (inflated) mean good quality.
My Nang Kang Mudstars which I have on my Disco (33x12.5x15) have endured some rugged country over the last 8 years and have come through without a problem, neither puncture or cut sidewalls.
Only reason I bought new ones was because my Son and his mate were going up to Sydney to buy some @ $185 ea., usually around $200 ea.
So if you want to blow money paying for a name, go for it, Regards Frank.

I can get a pic off the net of a Nang Kang Mudstars that has fallen to bits frank but I wont. The reason I put IMO is just that. MY OPINION. I dont understand a lot of things either. ;) BTW my brand name tyres were not much more than yours.
Do you know the cause of the Very Expensive Cooper failure and how would a cheaper tyre have fared in the same situation?
Dave
I appreciate all the advice guys.
I have to admit im getting more and more confused to which direction to go.
I want to keep my spend at or below $2k for the rim/tyre job.
One day my heart is set on the Dick Cepek and the next im looking at the cheaper brands.......
Expensive ones i will only be getting 4 tyres and rims.
Cheaper ones i can then afford to get the spare as well so that would also have to be a consideration i guess.
I dont want to get them for show. Nor do i even care how well they drive on the road. Most of my time is spent getting mug on my car.
Traction is what i am ultimately looking for. Only had the car 6 months and have been bogged while out driving by myself 3 times!
I enjoy the challenge of getting out dont get me wrong.
I do intend to throw some road rubber on my current set or rims as a spare set for long drives.
Like to see that pic of the mudstars, my Son and his mate have the same tyre on as mine, over 12 months ago and I can tell you they get flogged, not a problem.
Mine performed faultlessly for 8+ years and still enough tread to use, I wouldn't **** on Coopers, Mickey Thompson (been dead for 30+ years),
Bridgestone, Cepeks (all probably made in Korea), first set of Bridgestone's lasted 14 months on my Bronco.
Only other tyres I would buy would be Pirelli Scorpion, Hankook (yeh I know made in Asia somewhere), Kumo (same but good).
The Nang Kang's were cheap $175 ea. and they passed my test of laying my weight, 110kg at the time over the tyre, before fitting on the rim and they were the only 4wd tyre there that could support my bulk without collapsing. Proved me right 8+ years of trouble free (hard) use, great off road, OK on tarmac, gamble paid off, so I will tell anyone that'll listen what a bargain Nang Kang Mudstars are, In My Experience (IME), drop us a PM when you post up the pic of the buggered Nang Kang, Regards Frank.
@Tank.
After reading your posts i decided to ask a local tyre mob about NanKangs.
He reply went something like this....
"WHAT! You want a price on nankangs?
Look mate i have worked in this industry for 25 years and have only ever sold one pair!
I cant sell you these tyres, They are no good!"
That was pretty much word for word.
So based on that i wont be going that brand.
And in typical style i am on the fence beyond that.
I really need to make a decision as im placing the order on Wednesday.
STRONGLY looking back at the original tyre now being the Maxxis Bighorns.
Seems no one has bad words to say about them.
Damink.
don't forget that certain tyre places get kick backs from selling certain brands.
Just sayin, don't let some tyre bloke (who sells a certain brand), influence your decision.
:)
