Advice on tyres

If it is because a skinny tyre will dig down deeper to reach solid ground, well, in 99.99% of cases the diff and chassis will bottom before the skinny tyre reaches solid ground, Then along will come a Bogan like me with ugly fat (like me) tyres and pull the skinny out, LO)L, Regards Frank.

on sand its all about balooning your tyres to get as much surface area on the sand to float on top. so wider tyres might be better but not essential.

i personally find wide tyres look too boganish. sort of thing you see patrol drivers do.

another reason why the diameter is more important.

i think having 235 mud tyres and 265 mud tyres makes very little difference if they have a similar diameter.

good example is the old jeeps which general Eisenhower credited with being 1/3 of the reason why the allies had won the war. very skinny large diameter tyres. those things went almost anywhere.

just think LR suit the skinny tyre better, they are a more refined indian um i mean english vehicle.

i guess depends on how each driver drives too. you get some idiots who managed to get bogged with 4 inch lifts and massive mud tyres and then a quaint vehicle drives past them because the driver of that vehicle is just a better driver.

ive always been happy with my standard 235/70 duellers AT. my landy is a machine offroad. having said that though, i have just purchased 245/75 BFG AT which i got for $1080 fitted n balanced with free car detail.

gota be happy with that.

i'll let you know how i go with them once i have them put on and try them out a bit.

i will keep my old ones as they still have good tread. eventually sell them if i am happy with the 245s.

I think on sand its the length not the width of the tyre which keeps it on the surface. A wide tyre just means a bigger sandhill building up in front which slows progress. A narrow tall tyre has a smaller frontal area but a longer footprint so it stays more afloat as the front of the front tyre packs the sand down for the rear of the front tyre (and the whole rear tyre) to roll over.


As for digging down, the chunkier the tread the more likely it is to dig down, which is good in mud, but bad on sand.

Just got the 245/75 bfg put on today. Was very disappointed they put the white letters on the inside. Part of the reason i got the tyres is due to the look. Thinking of calling them, they didn't even ask, would have assumed the white on the outside was first choice.

Anyway, looks good although will require a camel cut and the steering will need to be adjusted as theres rubbing on full lock.

Also they did wheel alignment which is nice and straight on the road but the steering wheel now sits slightly to the right, which is annoying.

PS i have coils all round but I believe it is standard height or possibly 1 inch with maybe sag. I'll post pics tomorrow.

That is horrible man.
I would be back to the tyre place and demanding you get what you want.
White letters on the outside. Yea thats standard.
They should have asked. And i would demand they fix it.

Steering wheel not straight then they have not done a correct alignment.
Take it back man.
I heard some where having a non aligned wheel can cause extra load on the steering box.
They should use the centralizing hole in the box to make the wheel straight.

called them up. guy is gona try get me back in today. said they will fix the steering wheel and put the letters on outside. he said most people want the letters on the inside and i disagreed with him but he was pretty nice and said it wasnt a problem and they would fix it.

so it's not a matter of taking steering wheel off and centralising it? you have to do it from the box?

my old nissan had splines on the wheel, you would take wheel off and turn it a bit.

my disco doesnt have airbags. if it did there would be airbag signs around the place wouldnt there? mine has nothing.

Well I've never seen bfg the other way round. Most 4wd people are show offs. I do like to make my car look good as well.

Your steering wheel alignment is done by the relay rod from the steering box to the left wheel, the wheel alignment is done from the track rod between the wheels.

When I had mine done last the relay rod was seized and they couldn't move it, so I told them not to worry I would take it off and un seize it and then bring it back and they aligned the steering wheel.

White lettering out was probably standard in 1983.........:D


Only thing a slightly off set steering wheel will interfere with is the cancelling of the blinkers........pop the wheel, move around a spline or two as required. This they should have done.
