FWIW disco 300, I've always obtained the best economy in a Defender when trailing around the suburbs.
When I get back to where I normally live and drive, the country, fuel consumption increases.
A Disco should be better in this regard, my Defender had 33" MT's, rack, ladders on top, bull bar, etc. So economy is bound to suffer as speeds increase.
The 300Tdi is an incredibly efficient design if you can keep it in its sweet spot, and little things such as a more efficient intercooler, reduced exhaust back pressure, etc. can help, but our cars are sheds on wheels and air is the enemy.
Very interesting posts. I must apologize for a previous post of mine though. I said my average fuel consumption was 8.3 llitres per 100 klm. It is actually 8.7 litres per 100 klm. I'd still be happy with anything under 11 litre per 100 klm with 31" tyres and roof top tent though .
For the last ten years I've averaged 11.5-11.8l/100km. (Defender)
At least with the 255/85's the odo (and speedo) are pretty correct. With stock 235/85's or 7:50/16's the odo is roughly 8% optimistic, which obviously skews the economy readings better than actual.
The last tank doing runs through Sydney to the eastern suburbs from the outer west, I've averaged 10.5l/100km with a ladder on top.
Considering the pump is tuned to max out EGT's on hills and get the turbo spooled quickly at low revs, that's pretty good IMO.
i definately get in the 9s/100km range around the city. not 100% sure about country. would say more like the 11s. but more wind resistance too.
i have moved from standard tyres though to 245/75. so that will have changed a bit.
I swear some of you drive around at 75kph getting Figures like that my. Stock disco auto won't do better then 10 on the highway at 110-130 kph the defender set up much like ricks around 11.5 on the highway at 100 but that improves if I stick around 90/95 and out west with little traffic and not being in a hurry that's how I drive it
I don't do any city driving. On the highway I sit on 100kph. I only do 110kph if I'm in a hurry. I just think the engine sounds happier at 100kph wich is just a tacho needle width over 2500 RPM.
The noise gets to me after a while so 100 on the speedo Is a good pace that's around 95 Ish
