    Finally a 1998 Disco 1 300 Tdi

    Finally got myself a Discovery 1 300 Tdi. This forum was very helpful in my search for this one.

    looks good. there is a thread for posting new member introductions etc. maybe post there as well and add a few details bout your disco.

    thought that coastal limestone looked familiar.

    Well, I hate being such a dip **** some times.

    I posted in the technical forums last night about some help as I damaged my alternator trying to replace a bearing. Idiot! Well I fixed it up and all sorted now. The horrifying noise of two cats fighting inside a metal bin being rolled down a scrap metal pile has gone. I now own a soldering iron and I'm slightly more capable than I was this time yesterday thanks to some idiotic mistakes.

    I'm sick of the horrifying fuel consumption I've been getting, and especially since my plugs are as black as midnight at the moment, only weeks after they looked great I figured I'd check my MAF among other things. Connected or disconnected it runs just as rough. So, I'm taking that to mean it is dead. I'm also now pushing a bit of black vapour out the exhaust. A sure sign of over fuelling.

    Measuring between the red/black and green/blue I am seeing nearly 9v with car off. The red/black and far wire is set to 1.1volts for the CO trim. I believe that the 9v is way out of whack? Whilst blowing through the MAF I am also NOT seeing a voltage rise when measuring the two left wirs voltage. Is it time for a new one?

    From memory, the terminals that you measure the CO base setting at will not rise with revs (or blowing through it). But yes, 9v doesn't seem right.


    Also check the EFI/coolant temp sensor. When the fail, it will usually run very rich. Should be around 300 ohms?? @ operating temp.

    Agree. The CO trim remains stationary. But the first and second wires should produce an increase in voltage with any wind passing over them. Seems that she is dead!

    I'll have another look at the thermo resistance, but that was fine a few weeks ago too

    After my holiday in Brisbane I'm now home and back into it. Removed the radius arms in preparation or getting the old bushes out (right hand side ones are almost out already on their own!) and new ones in. Did have a clunk that has since gone, but I believe it was due to the bushes moving out of their housings and jamming tight stopping the clunk. I'm also expecting these new bushes to fix up my deathly loose steering on the highway. A second hand MAF should be getting fitted tomorrow as well which *fingers crossed* fixes my 40l/100 issue and the horrid rough running at the moment.

    Also, not a disco, but a 'new' 4wd I got today, a 95 Pajero 2.8 TD. Was told the fuel pump was dead. Turns out, the turbo has actually crappo-d itself.

    First hose I pulled off, inter cooler to intake.... Not a good start.


    Then things just got worse and worse, ultimately resulting in this.



    So, in the process of doing that as well. But because that car is in the sun, it is a night time job with the disco being an anytime job.

    Old radius bushes out, new ones in (had to get Pedders to actually get them out and in) and the death shakes are gone, well dissipated at least!

    $50 MAF from the wreckers and car is back to being a normal car again. I managed 167 km from 67 litres of fuel on my last tank, so the new MAF should pay for itself inside of a tank.

    The horrid 'click' on start is back though. So, I think I'll check all of the earths on the car, see if i can sort it out. As it is bugging me!

    Quick little session today. Met a bloke, went out for a wheel.... He had a little Daihtsu Feroza with 32s, he got the car yesterday.

    Anyhow, literally the first mud hole he got stuck on his bash plate so I drove around him and pulled him out. He was a bit bashful after that and kept high and dry. We made it to large dam/creek and he wanted to cross it. I suggested walking it, but he wasn't fussed so off he went. He had a huge bow wave, over the wheels, over the bonnet. About 40m in the car just stops, in mid thigh/testicle touching water (was nice and warm though). He has an open pod filter. Took on a heap of water. I reversed in and pulled him out, trusty disco.

    Pulled the intake, fair bit of water. Car wouldnt turn over. So I tow him back to the main road, about 3km. He wanted to try for a tow start. I advised against it considering it likely being hydro locked. He wanted It anyway so I did. Just big lock ups. Soooo, I suggested pulling he plugs and trying to crank any water in it out. Haven't heard how he went though. Bit of a bummer.

    Ergh, so today was my time to be the pig in mud.. And get stuck.





    I had just finished an hour or so out with a bloke and I figured I'd take the cross country route home. I ended up getting geographically embarrassed and decided to stop driving down a river and find a main track. I could see a few tracks up the edge of the river bed and headed to them. Bad move. The sand, which I had been driving on for ages without a problem, was actually quick sand. It sucked my front end down so I quickly stopped. I jumped out, pressure down to dit, shovel out and dug, and dug, and dug. Then tree branches, logs and what ever I could get my hands on to jam under the tyres. No luck. I stopped just before the chassis was on the ground. Front diff was on the ground but the rear end was on still fairly decent ground. The pictures are taken after maybe my second attempt to escape. I sunk down slightly more and the bull bar was practically on the ground.

    I got a few mates to come to help me. A patrol on 35s and a 6" or so lift, twin lockers. He ended up bogged to the chassis plus a bit. The Hilux recovering him, also bogged. A Ranger also tried and got bogged. So, we recovered the Hilux and patrol properly, then tried some other odds and ends. Ended up taking the long way round to get behind my car and the Patrol snatched me out.

    Four hours of sand, digging and stuffing stuff under my car. What a hoot!

    Nearly 194km now. How ever many that is on the diff.

    A night out in the bush 4wd with a few mates. Got an 80 series bogged, then had to hook a 60 series to a Hilux to winch him out. Disco is going alright. Was doing a heap of water wading last night, with water over my bonnet. Disco goes alright though, but the door seals aren't the best and let a bit of water in over time.

    35s, lift and bogged. Being massive and powerful doesn't help when you weigh over 3T and the ground is made of quick sand!



    New starter motor is on its way. Couldn't completely resolve my start issues, so for $130 I'll replace it. It is odd, first start of the day may take dozens of attempts now, then when I'm out in the bush and dirty and wet seems to start fairly quickly. I've also now got an unreliable temp gauge. I watched it last night over about 3 seconds to from middle to off the top hot. I shut the car off, opened the bonnet and everything was cool. I fupigure it is water on the sensor as I was deep all night. It started wandering around too, up and down with no real connection to anything. I'll give it a clean and see how I go.
