Im doing this job tomorrow, I'll be fitting 3 hole elring composite. Fingers crossed it all goes well. I did this job a while back and got about 5ooo ks before over heated. The top plastic bleed bung let go, it blew in half. Caught it all way too late. Replacing them both with brass and installing MadMan tomorrow too so if any more water related events I'll catch them early enough not to damage the head.....I hope.

As a matter of interest the invoice from britparts states the country of origin for each part I purchased as follows

OEM Head complete - new style United Kingdom
elring head gasket set Germany
MLS Head Gasket Taiwan
Water Pump China
Thermostat United Kingdom
Brass radiator plugs China

I definitely will only keep the water pump as an emergency spare.

get an engine saver. put that in place of the top thermostat bung. was very easy to install. use the ems to measure head temp. there is a bung on top of the head under where the heater pipe goes. its m12x1 i think. ill check when i get home. use your vdo sender you got with ems kit for that bung. you will need adapter. m12 to 1/8npt. i would recommend not drilling the two stainless steel screws into header tank as per ems instructions. asking for trouble.

i was going to fit float switch on my header tank but dave talked me out of it as you can still have water in your header tank but can be loosing coolant in the rest of the system, giving you a false reading.

i dumped my float switch and used the ems just for temperature and the engine saver for coolant loss warning.

but the same advice for contact numbers for parts and the like are there for you too if you need them...

ITs not the style of gasket (its not the plain metal one it has the pressure sensitive sealant on one side) its that that one is not up to the standard that I would install.

If a customer insisted that I install that they would get the windows treatment of a full warning that no warranty shall be implied/offered on the job. are you sure, are you really sure. Are you completely positive you want me to install something I do not wish to install and will not be offering you any warranty on the success of the job for any reason.

Then and only then would I install that for a customer.

sorry just to clarify. you mean the britpart gasket he has? or you mean the elring gaskets? or you mean the steel gaskets?

and with the elring ones, the pressure sensitive film... if say it was sent to a customer and during transport something may have been leaning on it or the customer stored it somewhere where an object was on it, could that affect the glue? or does it need the mighty headbolt torque to actually activate the adhesive?

PS i ended up using that advice and contacted MRauto for the alternator, waterpump, PS bracket. got a second hand, refurbished one off them. new ones are in excess of $450. got the refurbished one for a decent price. Brian? from there seemed like a decent bloke too and very helpful

The MadMan doesnt use a float switch system, it incorporates a section into the upper hose that measures both temperature and water level.

i was going to do the float switch, wasnt part of the madman kit but you can hook up a float switch to it as long as it is positive on.

the system i got with my ems2 was 2 stainless steel screws which go into the header tank. i never saw the system you are talking about but would say thats safe enough in that case. i was assuming you were using the 2 SS screws in tank to be honest which i would not recommend.

Thats an old design I think (float switch).

I actually thought the water level would have been in the top bung....but no....its an insert into the top hose...long as its sealed well should work.

Im gonna get on top of this bloody pommie thing yet. I like it, it just takes some time, patience and lots of stuff ups.

there are 3 general type of gasket.

there are the material composite ones. they are my preference to install. (like the one that was in yours that left the beads of sealant)
there are the all metal ones with the sealant on them like the one pictured. I will happily install these, the workable tolerance for the block is a little tighter for a guaranteed result but they are very good when they are in good condition and if both the head and block are perfect then these last the longest.
There is a metal one with NO sealant on them. I wont install these full stop end of story If when I do the parts check for the job and you have one of these you wont even get the no warranty story you will simply get the "Sorry Just not going to do it" line.

The metal one that Newt has is the TYPE I would install for a customer but not the one he has pictured.

The pressure sensitive film is touch and go his has marks and damage and there is damage on the metal face as well. It also looks like it has some damage on the fire ring area near where the exhaust would be.

and then theres the misaligned hole for the oil return.

what causes the issues is hitting, bending and point loading.

MR auto has been my goto guys for landrover parts since 2002. I have a working relationship with them for parts and have the privledge of being one of the guys they call when they have a squirely question for perentie stuff.

They will prepare travel kits for you and if you return them unused you get a full refund or parts credit. I have on occasion had that include a complete engine that was left crated ready to ship for 2 weeks while I went to investigate and engine for repair/replace for one of their other known customers.

They will also (once you have a developed a reputation with them ) on request send you all variations of a part if you dont know what you're going to be up against and then give return credit for unused parts upon return.

I routinely get parts from them deliverd to perth inside a week. Their prices are not always the cheapest available but in my line of work when Its a NIRTS deal I have never been able to fault them.

IF its not NIRTS or for a customer with a deadline then Roverlord is very hard to beat for parts for planned repair/maintenance work.
