the 24 spline conversion is easy, grab a 24 spline center and axles to suit.
freewheeling hub conversion, thats a little more entertaining.

Are salsbury axles just another name for the 24 spline? I would be able and willing to lash out a couple of hundred bucks for a set of axles that are going to last me a few thousand/ten thousand ks. That should give me a few years of use.
Is the hub conversion just a technical job, or a tool/equipment intensive one too?
Are you in Katherine or Tindal? I take it by your signature your an ex ADF pers. I'm out at Robbo in Darwin.
No, Salisbury axles are basically a metric Dana 60. They are huge and very strong. The only problem is LR fitted them with puny 24 spline axles. Google defender rear diff or salisbury vs rover and you will see the difference.
Mick Garner had a comp rangie on 35's with welded diffs for a while. He managed quite well, but had a large stock of rear axles and front stubs on hand.
I welded up the diffs on my demo derby cars, but I'd never do it to a LandRover. Axles are too weak.
you only have to weld one side gear to the carrier, no need to fill the lot up with weld
Funny enough a Bloke in a V8 Hilux came to buy a Salisbury carrier I had on ebay, said it was for his Dad's Landy , I asked what the motor was and he popped the bonnet to show me a Range Rover motor, (yes in a HiLux) and he said he had a CIG locker in it , drove it everywhere and never busted an axle , Proceeded to do axle tramping burnout down the road when he left. - you just could never do that with a LR axle !!!
Great, so it is certainly looking like it is more and more possible then to get away with it.
I don't think il, be doing any burnout so any time soon, the disco barely has enough power to get itself moving, let alone with the tyres at a different speed to the rest of the car.
it just needs a talking to...
if you'd like I can look into getting a center welded up for you.
best option for me is have it out and ready to go for 12 dec and I'll bring it back a week later.
I'll see if I can get it welded up here first, I might even be able to get our mechanics at work to do it for me if need be.
But, I'll look into spare axles first. I'd hate to have it off of the road during the wet when all the fun is to be had!
I did a 10 spline rrc diff years ago and it stood up really well about two years of bush and daily driving including towing. But when the short axel finally went bang there was no way of getting the broken splined part out of the diff centre so it was binned
I cant help but wonder how a welded diff would go with 33 inch muddies?
Reason i ask is i have a spare diff center, welder and a lot of time on my hands.
Might blow some rods into it and find out.
A little worried i will smash my axles to dust but hey.
Cant see myself buying a locker any time soon.
