    fuel pump

    Hey.
My 94 3.9 update model is having a bit of a fuel pump issue. The vehicle is on duel fuel which I run a bit every day on petrol but for a little while now the fuel pump is a bit intermittent. The fuel pump will be fine for a while, maybe a week or 2 then suddenly it will stop working. It is fine while it is running and never stops working while driving but sometimes when I go to start the car on petrol the fuel pump wont turn on.I am thinking it might be a relay due to the pump being fine once it is running but having trouble starting sometimes after the ignition is turned off.Can anyone direct me to the possible whereabouts of the fuel pump relay so I can check it.Thanks in advance.

I think the fuel pump relay is up behind the drivers kick panel (look for fat white/purple stripe wiring) but I still think it's more likely to be the pump. If the brushes are sticking slightly a sharp bump can get it going again, like a thump with a FBH (*) or 4x2 to the bottom of the fuel tank.

(* FBH stands for Fairly Big Hammer in case anyone in the Swear Filter Department is wondering. )

    Thanks bee utey.
I also just checked the rave electrical manual which I thought I had lost with my last computer operating system distro upgrade.I located the relay and put in a spare one I have but still no luck, the spare relay may be faulty. Also checked the fuel pump which is always a bugger due to having to unbolt the scuba gas tanks.Anyway I took out the pump and connected it to the battery and it is working fine but when re connected it is still not working. So what else could be the issue.Could it be a faulty fuel cut off switch or maybe another relay within the lpg side of things for the impco lpg system.

With the engine idling on gas, get out your test lamp or multi meter, check for power at both sides the fuel pump fuse, the input terminal of the relay (#30) the output terminal of the relay (#87), the connector above the rear exhaust resonator position, and so on. I'm not 100% sure of all the failure sites of a LR loom but these are all known failure sites. The white nylon housings for loom connectors usually go black when they are damaged by heat from dodgy connections. Having simple test equipment and knowing what colour wire you are chasing is loads better than throwing handfuls of random components at the vehicle. Oh, and very few LPG systems shut down the fuel pump, in any case you should be able to see where in the fuel pump loom someone has bodgied the wiring.

Have you thought of checking the fuel pump solenoid and the connection to the coil. I know some of the older Range rovers used to break the wire near the coil and this would stop the fuel pump receiving power.

I am not aware of a separate fuel pump solenoid on the petrol models.I have checked all coil wires and they seem fine. Will check relay with multi meter over the next couple of days when I have time.

I had been a bit busy to look at the car again but got stuck into it yesterday and noticed a burnt terminal on the short lead that goes to the fuel pump.I have replaced the lead which is a bugger of a job when you have to unbolt and lift up the gas tanks to get access to the pump but I have it sort of working again, still a little hit and miss with power getting to the pump. This particular problem started over a year ago when a faulty alternator internal connection was causing the little fuel pump lead to burn out.I replaced the lead twice before I found the cause of it at the alternator and then installed a new alternator. All has been well for over a year until now.I just had another look at the wiring and the wiring plug that goes to the final short one to the pump has been a bit burnt at the purple/white wire outlet. Can anyone tell me what this wire is for exactly,is it the main power supply ?.Getting closer to fixing it at least it seems.
    Cheers

All sorted hopefully, looks like it was a case of dirty terminals.
