I half expected the head to have a crack in it but it looks good and will be worth getting it checked and kept as a spare.

Remember back in the day that the original black tanks would just let go along the seams without any apparent cause ?
I've had a couple of dodgy new tank caps too, it pays to check them, but the problem was they wouldn't hold pressure.
How do you check the expansion tank caps? Did you have oil in coolant? Coolant in oil? My coolant been leaking out as you know. I'm scared now after reading this that my leak is due to gasket which i spent so much time on and went into so much detail for.
Just opened my expansion tank cap after day and a half sitting there and there was still some pressuse in it. That's not usual.
When my head cracked 2 years ago it still ran fine but cooling system was pressurised with no leaks from the gasket itself , this time was similar except coolant was being pushed out and cap couldnt handle it - they are only designed to release air pressure.
Due to airlock coolant wasnt circulating properly so it got hot.

well mine has a brand new turner head in it so i do not even want to think about the head being cracked. my work is 6km away and i drove there and back three times. coolant temperature in the head stayed at 86-90C, the engine saver didnt come on so i didnt loose that much water. oil pressure was at 46psi.
one thing i noticed before the last drive is when i switched it on the oil pressure was at 48psi when i was idling in the carpark. I am not 100% on this but when i idled before it always used to sit on 28psi. not sure if this is straight from cold or not though, as when the temperature built up the oil pressure dropped again when i idled.
if i was to run the car this afternoon with the expansion tank cap off, if i was getting a pressurised cooling system, would i not see bubbles coming up from tank?
If the cooling system was being pressured and the cap off I would expect coolant to gush out as the gas has to go somewhere and take the coolant with it. That's how mine reacted when the head gasket went between the cylinder and the water gallery.

so if mine doesnt do that with the cap off then it may be good news? ie. something other than head gasket possibly? my temps sensor is in the head at the back. if it overheated wouldnt i get a rise in temp on my ems2 if i was not getting any circulation? which means the head should have been spared damage and it may have been just the head gasket letting engine compression in cooling system. bear in mind i lost barely any coolant. mustve popped right when i was near home luckily. if it popped at all.
