Dicovery 1 front end a question or two

there is actually specialised equipment needed. to get the stupid wheel nuts off. even the non locking ones have a coating on them which is supposed to be 27mm but when they corrode underneath it swells and becomes another unknown size.

when i fitted new tyres the tyre place was useless. they were meant to do wheel alignment and got it wrong twice, in the end i got LR specialist to do it. they damaged some of the wheel nuts though. so i suggest to find reputible wheel shop and not go to a major chain.

i had to go in there the second time and show the guy how to put a 27mm socket on the wheel nuts. involved a hammer. check what wheel nuts you have. dont know much about the locking ones but heard they are a pain.

apart from that. everything else can be done with standard tools.

I've never had a problem with the 27mm wheel nuts. Love how so many of the big nuts on LR are 27 or 30. I think your tyres are probably bad. Try rotating rear to front.

Nah its not a tyre problem. Nothing to do with the alignment. The disco wheel nuts with the coating on them are known for swelling a bit and becoming a bigger size. You can pull the coating off and they become 26mm but then you have a hole in the middle of each one, which looks bad and introduces dirt. You can buy wheel nuts for them with no coating and no locking mechanism.

Other thing you can do is slightly oiling inside of your 27mm socket and tapping it on the nut with a block of wood and hammer.

Well a month and a bit later I got around to doing some thing about this problem. Life`s little issues do get in the way some times and when it is not a major problem unless you are doing 100k`s you tend to not worry to much. Rotated the wheels front to back. Problem 95% gone, so the tyres where it seems the main issue. But there is a hint still lurking. Shock absorbers and steering dampener look very very original. Might have to have a look at replacing them with a good set for more off road use.

If they are original that has to be your problem, never had 19yo shocks that were any good.

The shocks and steering dampener are the ome black ones. So yeah I`m guessing there original, unless the first owner was pedantic about replacement parts. So now the decisions to agonise over. I already have set of 3" lift springs. Do I fit them and get longer shocks? Or do I just keep it simple and get standard shocks. Is 3" to much lift?

2 inch seems to be a good lift without too much work.
3 inch will put a heap more stress on your car.
However as you asked, yes you could fit the 3 inch and use stock shockies however your travel would be limited. (shockies bottom out).
Best to replace shockies with longer travel ones to suit.

If you do decide you dont want those 3 inch springs then i will swap you for a set of 2 inch ones (king springs) if you like. :p :p

I've been running my 3" lift for about 8/9 years without issue but i do agree that 2" is far less hassle and doesnt require any mods not that mine has either.
