Yes I did drive it, although unsure about me being the expert, a 300tdi isnt rocket science, anyway...

*It pulls good for a 300tdi.
    *No smoke during full throttle.
*Its "clack clack" is quiet for a 300tdi.
*It doesnt have that just take off flat spot.

We went for a drive in another 300tdi disco that has only done 55K, and it shows while the "new" one had more pull, there wasnt much in it, so to me the engine is in pretty good condition...

    The differences were prolly...
*Ive tweaked the pump on the other one.
*tyres are 245/70R16 (as aposed to the OPs 245/75R16)

    Regards
    Daz

id say mine would scream its ts off if i went to 4200. probably can get there though. maybe im just more sensistive to the engine noise. just seems like mine at 3000 is very loud and boost seems to stop. maybe thats normal. i just always thought mine runs a little rough but after DazzaTd5 had a look at it and said its quite good for a tdi im more relaxed about it.

Too true, after my cooling and head gasket issues i was a little paranoid about going away on the weekend and i was watching the gauge like a hawk expecting a problem but had none at all.

I even had one eyeball surgically removed and attached right in front of the MadMan.

You sure your Tacho reads correctly Fausto????

Not 100% sure. That was one of my original queries. Maybe the higher the revs the more it's out, but for highway speeds etc. it seems about right. Sits a bit under 2500 at 100kms in fifth with 245/75. With original size tyres used to sit on 2500. But i swear it sounds louder than you expect at 3000+. So maybe it's out n the higher revs show the difference more.

Doesnt sound right, mine is auto but 100kph @ 2150rpm. Have you replaced the alternator at some stage ?

Yes around 2150 rpm at 100kph for mine. (31 10.5 r15- same rolling dia as 245.75R16)
Good question re alternator - did you establish if the tacho is actually reading correctly?
Re free revving - mine easily revs past 3500 - and moreso since a pump tweak where I also ground a couple of mm of the white spacer on the plunger inside the pump.
