My old radiator started leaking, plastic end tanks, so I replaced it with an all alloy radiator. With the aircon condensor removed, the new radiator and no shrouds around the fan the coolant temps were low. Even with giving it a heap of stick, on a 35c day, the coolant was only reaching 70c instead of the normal 85/87c. Yes, all pipes are on correct and the thermostat was tested before refitting the radiator.

While I had the radiator out, I had my cracked intercooler fixed, removed excess wiring, cleaned up the engine bay a little and fixed up a few other things. Good for another 12 years of motoring.

Anyway, wanted to share my elation.

Know the feeling

I Bought my D1 Tdi new in 97 and have been considering getting rid of it and moving onto something else. It's been off the road, having a few major problems like rust (see the what have you done with your Disco today thread) and is losing water somewhere so a head investigation is in order soon, plus it needed some $ spent on other parts.
I decided that I couldn't part with it as I love it so much. Fixed her up and got it road worthy and registered again last week.

She still needs some more work and I can't wait to fix the broken Seat diaphragm.

I'm so happy with my decision.
I still love the old girl and hope to get another 18yrs joy.

Did I read you have a D2 motor in your D1 correctly?

Thats how i read it but not sure its correct.


Whenever i have some issues with my d1 i start thinking about upgrading , but as soon as its running good again i forget about it.

Yeah, a TD5 in a 97 Disco (used to be 3.9 V8).

Every time I consider getting rid of my Disco, I just can't contemplate life without her. Now that I have another vehicle to drive daily and take on family trips, it doesn't matter if the Rover is being "modified" (repaired) and I can get to it at my convenience.

Did you do the conversion ? Have been contemplating a TD5 swap as i love my car but could do with a little more power/torque.

Les Richmond did it back in Feb 2006. Picked it up in March that year. Been bloody great.

Thanks, would have been an expensive exercise back then.

It wasn't to bad. I did commit to owning and driving it for the next 10 years. Now with 310,000km (160,000) since the conversion I still think it was a good option. Hasn't missed a beat. Never had stupid 3 amigo problems, got heaps of power and great economy.
