I did by a propoer spanner at 32mm on the advice of someone but its actually 36mm and shop was shut to go swap it, my bar was underneath to brace so i was going anticlockwise, ill make up a brace that bolts on to the pully

that mount was already mostly gone...
generally they wont come off with a shifter, you need the right size spanner that doesnt touch on the pully,
you may need to get in with a pencil torch to heat up the nut before you start.
it may be rusted in place or has been fitted with loctite. Do not use a thread locking loctite, use an antisieze, the rotation of the pully that drives the fan causes the thread to try and tighten up.
when you put it on make sure it seats home and dont try to wind it on by starting the engine. sure its quick but it does it up to about eleventy billion NM.
if the engine is turning you dont have enough torque reaction to get it to undo. sometimes gently pulling on the end of the pipe and then giving the pipe a smack with the hammer will be enough to break it loos without locking the engine otherwise you need to lock the engine by means of putting it in gear, getting a socket on the crank gear, hydraulicing a cylinder, or locking the flywheel.
Sounds like it has been loctited on like mine was. Had to use a lot of heat and an air chisel to get it off. Normally it should take just a whack on the spanner with the palm of your hand to loosen.

Please, don't assume the other posters don't know the correct direction of undoing. The fan on serpentine V8 engines has a normal RH thread and undoes anticlockwise. The fan on a vee belt engine is the one with the left hand thread. The simple rule is: always undo the fan coupling in the direction of fan rotation. Ignore the crankshaft rotation.Quote:
