Tappet sound, sometimes a bit loud - similar to diesel knock. I currently have the tappets set at a very tight .008 and it is still there a little. Still intermittent. I am suspecting the lash caps, although they were replaced, the replacements were crud. Time will tell when I get the hardened VW lash caps.Quote:

Maybe lift pump? It is right next to the IP and mechanical. Mine's a lot quieter in that area since I eliminated it for a facet pump mounted nearer the tank. Even if the lift pump is malfunctioning the engine will still run OK ish.

Advanced injection timing can create some strange noises.
Not obvious noises, but if you are looking for them they are there.
Replace lash caps on a 300 tdi today with the empi caps.
#2 exhaust cap was %99 missing.
The noise sounded almost like a bigend bearing and was more noticable on the p/side of the engine bay.

Are the Lash Caps OEM Land Rover parts, if they are and anything like the ones I bought (OEM Land Rover) then they are less than rubbish, I would recommend Crane Cams lash caps, Regards Frank.Quote:
