    I'll look at that thanks.

I just went out and started it, but no noise. I listened through the stephoscope, but the lifter and vacuum pumps sounded pretty quiet. Both had a small tick but much the same. I sprayed lots of soapy water around the injectors, but no bubbles. I will jump in it shortly to go to town and probably have the noise start on the way there or back, or there again, maybe not

    Talk about frustrating.

    Thanks,
    Tom.

Well yesterday it developed a bit of a noise like the fan belt was slipping, but only wen the motor is accelerating. It isn't the belts as If I take it out of gear and gun it, no noise. No noise on deceleration either.

So I pulled the intake manifold off to have a look today. I could not see any obvious leaks - i.e. carbon but I did torque the bolts up a little more (to 45nm) as they were perhaps only about 25-30 nm.

It did seem to be a little better in regards to the intermittent noise, although after gunning it around town for a while, the intermittent noise did reappear at the end. I thought that the belt like noise was worse also.

Is it possible that the belt like noise is it blowing by the intake gasket under load (I did remove the intake earlier). It also has a Allisport intercooler fitted about two weeks ago. Is an exhaust leak usually visible on thse?

    Thanks,
    Tom.

Sure its not sucking a little air into the fuel system somewhere? Mine has at times and the self bleeding results in a tappety knocking sound. For me its mostly been shortly after startup, but ive had it range from lots when the reco'd FIP had some serious leaks, and it would run quite rough, to a little, like now when it bleeds air for a few seconds each morning.

Did the noise coincide with the new IC ? Small hose leak usually more like your belt noise rather than tappety tap

I have had a bad injector make tappety type noise, usually wouldn't be intermittent but possible? If you had a spare set of injectors for the twenty minutes work it might be worth a changeover?

I was referring to the exhaust manifold bolts working loose earlier, re the intermittent tap

re the belt like noise, new noises and new parts... could be coincidence but it sounds very much like boost pressure escaping. id be checking all the intercooler hoses.

Hi Simon, it was the exhaust studs that I tightened - you hav to remove the intake manifold to get to them.

I also think that it is the boost pressure escaping. Looks like I need to get the torch and a screwdriver...

    Thanks,
    Tom.

That makes a bit more sense, I obviously misread that bit badly

Hi Frank, I think they may be britpart. They have rounded tops and they felt tinny when fitted. I only fitted them as an attempt to get rid of the intermittent tappet like noise. They didn't make any difference.

    Cheers,
    Tom.
