Yes avoid synthetic oils in flat tappet engines. I use Gulf Western 20/50 with a bottle of ZDP zinc additive in the Rovers and Minis.

I've done pretty much everything funnily enough the 4.6 swap made quite a difference as they are a heavy vehicle with a relatively small engine
Next I am chipping it and looking at auto box mods
Keep the tdi if you want fuel economy, that's a given. Wouldn't it be cheaper to just buy a V8 Disco and sell the tdi unless it has a lot of mods (even then I wouldn't bother).
My V8 Disco has ****house fuel economy but I don't drive mine that much so I don't care (especially with 33's fitted :twisted:).
