    d1 v8

My son is going to swap his 300tdi auto for a v8 auto. Can't talk him out of it so what can we do to moderate its thirst. Have read various threads a few years ago when he had his first v8 but all we did was the bosch BIM module. Ive heard of ford injectors ect but any tips will help . Oils , filters ect, anything without an engine rebuild.

Not that much I'm afraid, they're thirsty especially around town but the combination of a V8 with an auto box and that intoxicating sound track make it all just about worthwhile (and petrol's not that expensive here compared to some parts of the world). LPG will help but you may loose space and it complicates things under the bonnet IMO.

On my 95 V8 I fitted a free flowing exhaust (straight through mufflers), Ford EL thermo fans, advanced the ignition timing to 12 degrees, cone airfilter and smooth bore inlet pipe and played around with the settings on the MAF using an air fuel meter, inflated the tyre pressures up to around 35psi, swapped in Ford Mustang injectors and Scorcher dissy with an MSD Blaster2 coil.

It goes alright and may have squeezed the odd 1 or 2 mpg out of it, though this depends largely on the driving conditions and style and how heavy you are on the loud pedal.

Yes after over 20 years of land rover ownership I agree, but I would like some improvement from really thirsty to just thirsty .My old 86 3.5 rrc I had in the early noughtys was rebuilt with 9/1 pistons, different cam and timing at 12degrees,manual, I once got about 28 mpg on a long run out of it. Once the tacho hit 2500 rpm it felt like a turbo cut in .It was happiest at around 110/120 kph and used less fuel than at 90/100 kph. So what i'm after is things like fully synthetic oils ,different air cleaners, ecu upgrades ect I know it will never be brilliant.

That's what I was thinking while reading the first post, but you beat me to the punch.

To the OP - I have 2 rover V8 vehicles, one manual, one auto. The manual V8 is a 3.5 carby in my 101 - does around 22 litres per hundred pushing that brick around. The other is a 3.9 EFI -14CUX in my RRC - it does around 18's (when it's running )

Do what you have to to convince your Son to stick to the 300tdi.

Apart from fuel consumption, unless the engine is known to you, if it has been hot at any stage, it could well be toast and you may not know until well after it's all said and done and you have it home wondering what to do next and how deep the rabbit hole goes (it's a deep hole...)
If you need to contact me please email homestarrunnerau@gmail.com - thanks - Gav.

gees, Id run really really far away from a 300,,
what are they again? a stationary engine attached to an accelerator pedal? and as much fun as two 200's,, maybe.
get an early manual 3 door,, nothing is as much fun as a disco going round corners without swaybars.

This will be disco no 6 for him .One v8,one 200 tdi and 2 300 tdi's and a td5.His third last one was a 300,we played with the fuel pump,no mufflers and defender t/c. Went really well till he laid it on it's side. He has been straying into the hot car realm for a while, last he had was a vl bombadore turbo,so the tdi auto is a little slow for him .Can't talk him out of the v8 .He is swapping with a mate of his.

The V8's arn't that fast either....

As for the economy, the right foot prob has the influence. My 3.5 V8 auto Disco can get 15L/100...can go 20+ with a heavy foot too

I have a relatively newly rebuilt 4.6 (stroked 3.9) in my D1. As everyone has said, you are not going to make this engine economical. The point of the post however is that both the engine builder and the guys I use for maintenance when I don't have time, are absolutely adamant that you should NOT use full synthetic oil in these engines - if you do the cams don't last.
